  • Problems with consolidate need help.

sorry of this sounds HISTERYA but after finishing my shiny new Edius 6 project i was ready to consolidate it (as i usually do for archive and share)

After consolidate i found that under "My Project Folder\Consolidate\CopyFiles" there are 996 files WITH STRANGE AUTO-GENERATED NAMES like

    D4BBCF5D-E075-44CC-AFAD-D04AAC0E97A9.m2t

    or

    0CA82557-43C1-4AC5-B660-754A80B437CB.wav

OK maybe it is not strange, maybe there exist another manual or online training that explain the "why" of this naming, or even "why" my data was renamed and maybe there i can found an explanation telling to me that "inside Edius the name remain the same" but guess what: THE CLIPS ARE ALSO RENAMED INSIDE EDIUS

but not in my case, after consolidate i put this folder in a server to share with anothers editor guys to use thoose files in diffrent projects.

i already know (of course i know) that the file is fine and me and my partners can work with the file but:

I-JUST-CAN-NOT-IMAGINE in a near future (like the next 30 mins) how would be exploring this folder and found

    YOURCOMPANYLOGO.psd
    or
    JAMESEARLJONESVOICEOVER.wav
    or
    INTROEPICALMUSIC.mp3
    or
INTERVIEWWITHGEORGELUCAS-940.avi (and lets say another 10)
    or
    LIGHSABERBATTLE-081.mxf
    or
    DIGITALJUICESWIPE-1141.mov

if none of thoose .avi .wav .mp3 .mxf .*** has the name we previously decided to be...

again please excuse my latin english and my "histeria" and excuse me if i miss the part of the manual-tutorial where "autorenaming" can be set to off

    Hi José.

There are a couple of ways around this to share media with the correct names of the files, with other Edius users. While these two methods will help for your problem, they do not sort out some of the other consolidation issues.

You could consolidate your project as a media only project, for sharing the clips with others. Just have a single sequence in the project that has your media in it that you want to share from your media bin (single sequence just makes it easier to identify the sequence for later sequence import). Consolidate this project as normal. This project/sequence/media/bin can then be imported via "Import Sequence" by anyone else, into either a new project that they are running or into an existing project. Just make sure they only select "Import Bin" and not "Copy clips on project folder". This should now show a new section in their bin structure, with proper names of the media.

The other way, which is much easier and with less steps, is. Any new project being used by anyone on your network or access to the other projects files, can just combine all the data. Create a new folder in your bin, give it a name that has something to do with the media of the project you are about to import. Right click over the icon for your new folder, not inside the open folder bin, and select import EZP. Again, this should import all original reference data with correct names etc. The good thing with this option is that it does not have to import from a previously consolidated project.

Both the above ways are good for sharing either sequence data or media data with others. Consolidating for the purpose of just sharing media with others, may be a waste of time anyway. Any media other than Canopus/GV based codec media, will not trim and will be copied whole, just like making an exact data copy. So importing the EZP in to a new bin folder may be the best way all round.

I would not worry too much about consolidated media having different names as physical files. Because their project bin names will be right after re-importing into another project. This of course does not help for identification of consolidated media in programs outside of Edius, but then you just reference back to the original rushes, which is how most cross platform workflows would work anyway.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

    Dave.

Loosing original file names is one of the most stupid things in consolidate.
Sadly the EDIUS project file is the one & only library can give you a hint what's in the clips after 'consolidate'!

In José's case, this issue is easy to get around. At worse, it's just a minor inconvenience. I have used the consolidate function more than most people, and in situations where deadlines, time, and money where of paramount importance. As much of a pain as it can be, there are ways to work around most of the weirdness of the consolidate tool. My instances of running in to brick walls, are not things that I see much of by other users. On that basis, you can understand why such things are low in priority on the list of things to do by the engineers. This is no excuse for not fixing something, but let's be real about this. If the world and his wife are moaning about Edius needing a tick box or not for timeline exports, or their whole universe will collapse and implode. Then no wonder more complex and undoubtedly more useful functions, that are used by less people, become back seat concerns.

No matter how you look at it. For most uses, the physical name structure of the files will not stop an edit. Either of the two workflows mentioned will get you through this, and the function of importing an EZP into a new bin folder, will sort a lot more things and make the program more useful. Like many other things in video production, Edius, and other programs. Knowing the positives and negatives, and doing a little planning, will get you through most situations.

        Cheers.

        Dave.

Hey David, greetings from the other side of the globe, and thanks for taking some time to share a workaround.

yes, of course, there could be another 20 ways of consolidating in Edius 6, yours sounds interesting and i'm gonna give a try.

Most important of sharing is to archive, because our clients do several works with us even from years ago and it is normal that new data (logos, animations shoots) be used in new projects and even with different clients; if those consolidated projects would be used only for me, there would be a really pain in the ... so i agree with Andreas Gumm

you can imagine several scenarios, but ,as everybody can thing, if the architect give to us a new building, the idea is not to stuck in the wall where use to be a door before (and there is not escalator, elevator, sliding door, hole, window, or tele-transporter), the idea is to learn how to climb, turn around the corner o get a hammer and break the wall (i hope everybody understand what i mean)

I will try a couple of different tricks i thing can be useful, of those works will let you know

          TIA

            Hola José.

Try the second workflow, it will work for your situation.

Let's say you have already got 10 complete projects/EZP's. Each of these EZP's contain 100 pieces of media, video, titles, audio etc. Now you want to integrate 10 pieces of media from each 10 EZP's in to either an existing project/EZP or brand new project/EZP. You simply import the 10 different old/archived EZP's in to the bin of your new project. You now have the ability to choose the 100 different media assets from the 1000 different assets that you need from your old/archived 10 projects/EZP's, to either integrate or start new.

This method will also work with projects/EZP's that had previously been consolidated. You now have the further option of re-consolidating this huge combined project.

Depending on how you have done any previous consolidations, and subsequent re-saves/consolidations etc. There is no reason why you should not have the correct media names inside your Edius project/EZP bins.

This method obviously opens up other creative possibilities for combining media, edits, sequences etc.

            Cheers.

            Dave.

today after installing 6.05 found thet this has not been solved, and i try the way you sggest and it is not bad if we thing to reimport it only in Edius, unfortunatelly i use several apps to do the job (photoshop, after, encore, audition -to neme just a few) and, if it is very frustrating to relink media when you know were it is AND ITS NAME it is IMPOSIBLE to relink files withou Edius... i just hope this be fixed...

The program does not inform us about that time by deleting data from the location where the file is located, there is no information about that will change the file names.
I think a lot of users of EDIUS almost got a heart attack as the files disappeared.
This is really a very bad idea to delete the files and not understandable for me, it is against the will of what any user delete a file without information that such a thing would take place.
Today I called to dis-tributed in my country and I told him what happens when the consolidation is done during a conversation and he was more surprised by the fact the file disappears.
I wonder how many actually use this feature because I do not much has been written about it.
Let me add one more information, I tested this feature three years ago, even as it was in version 4 and also I erased the files, did not react to it.
But now I begin to need this feature and I can not accept it so strange that it works.

Please explain how you should create a magazine clips, data, photos to share other projects, and a person working in a network where one file from shared resources on the network can be used in 100 projects to the consolidation of these files do not disappear from the shared resource.
                Please solve the problem.

                Regards Michael

Consolidate is really unusable under Edius 6.
I have some hudge projects with more 200 Go footages (+ backup : 200 Go) and after editing less than 30 Go , but now I can't consolidate properly.
                  Argh !
I look forward to the return of Consolidate as usable as under Edius 5.51.

I hope soon because the HDD are expensive now ...

Probably this will not change, but I think it should look like we should have a choice during consolidation
1st (yes / no) files to be copied to the directory of the project
2nd (yes / no) files to be transferred to the project directory (implies 1)
3nd (yes / no) file names to be retained

Selecting one of the project will not result in the consolidation will contain only what is actually located in the project directory, Rasht file is still available in shared network resources. It is not necessary because the files available for other projects generally do not contain too much space on the disk so that they can be copied to the project, but does not remove the network drives.

Additionally, if you want to use the project in another program it should be a choice to attach to export all the files.

I hope that the engineers working on Edius will take this into account, yet there is some very complex functionality.

                        And :
                        - all video/audio types must be consolidated : MPEG, AVCHD, ...
                        - names must be retained. I don't understand the reasons for this change.
                        - possiblity to consolidate a project already consolidated.

Names & paths must be consistent & biunique at all (as it worked in 5.5)!
