  • Rename a clip on the timeline?

    Can you do this?

I've looked on the forum and in the help file and can't find anything.

I've right clicked the clip and checked all the options.

The only way I can find to do it is
r/c > send to bin > rename > delete original clip > insert renamed clip

Long winded, when in Premiere I could r/c rename.

    good question

I often rename a clip in the bin, then after dragging to timeline, the name on TL does not update to the renamed name in bin

The only thing that get's close to renaming on the timeline is the following:
      - open the properties of a clip on the timeline
      - change the name (but you cannot change the filename)

The only thing that happens is that the displayed name changes.
I've tried this with 3 instances of the same clip on the timeline => each can have it's own "display-name" while still referring to the same actual clip.

Should have expanded on my question, but Bart may have it for me.

I have one long clip of an hour, as I was out and about a lot yesterday, so just set tape to capture in one go from start to finish, repeated 6 times.

So, I drop 1 hr clip on timeline and cut it to remove rubbish, while renaming clips left on the timeline to remind me what they are when I come back to editing properly.

I'm back off out again now, as it's nice and sunny - I could be in Ibiza - so I'll try it out this evening.

        Thanks.

Clip aliasing was something heavily requested after v1.0's release, and added in v1.5 onward.

The workflow being that one single continuous file be captured and added the bin, then placed on the timeline, and then divided and aliased accordingly, without affecting the parent clip still in the bin. I don't recall there ever being a deviation from this workflow..

But how do you do it?

            As Bart said above?

              1. Right-click on a clip on the timeline
              2. Choose 'Properties'
              3. From the Clip Properties window, choose the File Info tab
              4. Put in the alias name in the 'Name' entry box
              5. Click 'OK'

Should now have renamed the clip on the timeline only.

In my crazy system of media management, I tend to have a separate folder in my bin for the raw footage, and then have another folder which is then populated with all the cut, aliased clips - you do this by selecting one or more clips on the timeline and using SHIFT+B.

                    KH, thanks very much.
I also do it the same way, all original files in one folder, all cut in another etc etc.

                    Anton,
So far with the many I did yesterday, using the method in my first post, all bin renamed clips had their new name when inserted in the timeline. Did about 30.
