  • 4:3 16:9 correct display question

    Wedding footage is 1920x1080i PAL.

I export 2 sets - one full HD for Bluray and one DV (720x576) for DVD. (Both are 16:9)

When I play my m2v export on my computer, it plays with a perfect aspect ratio at 16:9. If I change my media player to 4:3, as expected, the picture is "squashed". This is how it should work.

Also, Encore is set up at 16:9 and the picture on the Encore timeline plays fine at 16:9. Not streched (as it should)

But when I play it from the DVD disk on an LCD plasma TV, when the TV is set to 4:3, the picture is fine (shouldn't be) and when I change the TV to 16:9 the picture is stretched. As you can see from the attached image, the exported file IS in fact 16:9.

    Why is this? What's wrong?

check the setup menu of your DVD player, its output must be set to 16:9 and not to "Pan and Scan" or 4:3

There are about 6 settings I can change through like "Letter box", "Cropped", "Subtitles", 4:3, 16:9... etc...

There were others that gave me a nice full screen picture but it cuts off some of the picture. I was just wondering why 16:9 on my DVD player stretches the picture.

I don't know, maybe your TV aspect is set incorrectly?

how is your DVD player connected? HDMI? Component? S-Video? Composite?

note: a TV always masks a few pixel all around, even LCD or Plasma

          S-Video.
Ok, it seems that it's just our TV. I was just afraid that it was a problem with the movie. Thanks.
