How easy is it

I have been editing with Media 100 for the last 10 years and am looking at setting up a new editing suite capable of both SD and HD content. The Edius solution looks realy good. My question's are ... How steep a learning curve to be able to produce content? Besides the PC requirement's what boardsets and storage solutions are being used?

I think you'll find the move to Edius pretty smooth. Some of the workflow will differ from Media 100 in terms of defining projects and bins. Edius works more like Premiere and FCP in this regard, but it's nothing a couple of tutorials won't explain.

Depending on your workflow you will need to decide whether you need the hardware options like Edius NX or SP. Or you might be fine with just the software version. Edius Broadcast software only would be appropriate if you plan to work with P2 or XDCAM sources in the future. The hardware options allow for component input and output (also HD-component out) if you need those.

In terms of an editing experience, I think you will really enjoy Edius, especially with the hardware options, as they will give you the same responsiveness as you have with a Media100 system. The "real-time" aspects of Edius are what draw a lot of users, and even when you run out of horsepower to do real-time, the rendering is fairly painless, with options to only render the sections that are too complex to play out.

Storage is easy as well, with 2-drive SATA raids providing plenty of throughput to handle most timelines.

Also supports DVCPRO HD (via Canopus HD codec), QuickTime DVCPRO HD (though you can only import, you cannot export QuickTime DVCPRO HD), and export to GXF to Grass Valley K2 and Turbo.

I was looking at the Broadcast version. I have purchased the Panasonic HVX200 and want to get my feet wet in the HD domain. I would also require the component I/O. Does the boardset support SDI I/O. I am currently using DVC Pro/DVC Pro 50 as my aquisition formats.

The product is good and appears to be making a turn around on production quality with in the software realm. SDI is currently only available on the Canopus HD turnkey. I don't know what it costs now but it used to be $45-$50,000. No way was it worth it compared to other systems on the market.
A few of us on the forum have been practically begging for SDI from either a card or an add on BOB...that is reasonably priced!!
If SDI is a deal breaker, still check out Edius. You might like it!

SD SDI is available for cheaper on the EDIUS SD turnkey. HD SDI is still a bit expensive, but pricing has changed recently.

the turnkey systems are a little pricey, especially the HD version with the HDBX1000/RX-E1. although not as pricey as quoted above, it is still in the realms of la la land when you consider the kind of robust hardware accelerated system using an alternative industry standard NLE that you could configure for that kind of money (there would be plenty of change for the rest of the gear you need for monitoring HD et al)

... but having said that, we have 2 of the turnkey HD edit stations that we hammer with all HD edits, day in and day out. They are very stable and offer great performance when treated right. Can't argue with that.

I think you'll be good with an NX Express. Component out is a plus. If you need component in (sd) at least, then the SP. Essentially these cards are similar, except the SP has a pro breakout box and professional connectors (XLR, BNC, RS422, etc) and SD Component in.

By the way, what kind of footage do you guys get usually? Are they digital already or do you have to capture? SD/HD? These all matter when considering what kind of capture card you're looking for. I know you are already into the P2 arena, but what about future proofing it? In this case HD Component in and HD-SDI come into play. No GV card supports these except the Edius HD turnkeys. You could do away with OHCI, but I think the delay might turn you off...as well as not seeing true colors in 4:2:2 space.
