4.51 uses direct3d for overlay, 4.24 doesn't, so it could have been enabled previously but only visible now due to 4.51 now using direct3d for overlay.

If your video card is ATI perhaps you have ATI Tray Tools installed?
In which case you can turn off the direct3d FPS counter in the ATI Tray Tools menu "Tools & Options / OnScreen Display /"

Sounds to me like you are running FRAPS, and it is displaying the number of screen updates per second.

Without wishing to seem a complete dummy, could anyone explain what the number, in yellow, is on the top right of the preview window.
Never had this in 4.24.

After compressing to quick time it even shows up in the QT player but only on the machine with 4.51 installed.
