  • Third party plug-ins and presets missing from list

It's a mystery to me. I've been looking through the forums, but can't find the problem discussed.

My wife's NX system, running Edius v5.51 experienced a crash, and when she rebooted and started up her current project, all the Vitascene, ProDad and NewBlue plug-ins, plus her presets are missing from the effects window list.

Mind you, the folders are there. And the contents of the folders must be there (explained below). I just can't expand the 3rd party folders to list their contents.

BTW, none of the Edius standard stuff is affected this way. However, all her handy-dandy presets she had created and saved are gone from the lists too.

To further explain by example: Say, I cannot expand a Vitascene folder to see the contents. However, I can drag the whole Vitascene folder to the clip, and all the items in that folder magically appear on the clip and in the information window (with bazaar results as you can imagine) just as you'd expect. But I cannot expand the Vitascene folder itself to see the individual contents in the effects window in order to pick and choose a single item from the list.

    Any help? Thanks

Sounds like the crash corrupted something in the Edius install. At least your projects are still intact. If that happened to me I would first try re-installing the filters from the bonus disc that came with Edius. If that didn't fix it I would try uninstalling Edius 5 and then reinstalling and re-doing the updates. That should repair any internal links needed to see the filters and work with them. After uninstalling I would also run a registry cleaner to make sure it is cleaned up before re-installing. CCleaner is a great freebie that I use.

Those would be my first steps unless someone else has a better idea.

If everything else is working fine then it should just be the install.

Phillip: Thanks for the reply. We're trying to avoid a lot of reinstalls, needless to say. We both have a heavy backlog of work, and a loss of a day isn't welcome right now :-)

The good news is that she had just started her project, so nothing is really lost. Just, it's going to be harder for her to move forward without some of the filters, transitions and effects she uses often enough.

Hopefully, somebody else will have some alternatives. But thanks again!

Anybody......One thing that might help this time and the next is this: Where are these 3rd party filters, transitions, effects, and user presets stored (still using XP Pro)? I can find various places under Edius 5, but I know that some of the presets and other stuff are scattered around in other places too. This kind of information might not only be useful solving our current problem, but I would also target them for our daily automatic backups to hopefully avoid furture headaches. Any help is appreciated.

While reinstalls can take time just an Vitascene install only takes a matter of minutes and would be worth a shot. Edius would take an hour or so but still not that long. Now a whole system reinstall you are talking a day. I see it as an hour spent to quickly fix a problem is better than 3 hours spent trying to figure out a fix. Of course she could just start her project and make sure she only uses the Edius filters till you have time to fix it. Then if you have to reinstall Edius the project will still be intact and no 3rd party filters will cause a problem.

Of course, you're right. There is a whole spectrum in the length that reinstalls take. Reinstalling the Edius Vitascene, NewBlue and ProDad packs that came from Edius would only take minutes. However, we've purchased quite a few extras too, and they would need reinstalling too. Plus, there's the problem of recreating the custom presets that she (and I'm sure most of us) has created in these packages and the standard Edius filters too. Unfortunately, it's starting to sound like it's going to be fairly painful.

And GV has never been very kind when it comes to reinstalls.....there's never a one step reinstall back to the latest version you're currently using. You usually have to go back to some point and reinstall and reinstall over and over. Lord, last time I reinstalled Edius was maybe back in v4x, and I think I had to start back in v2x, which was where my license origins lay. It's been a while, thankfully.

Still hoping somebody will come back with a magic bullet for me. If not, I'll fall back and punt.

How about trying a Windows Sytem Restore back to the day before the crash? Chances of this fixing it are not that high, but it is quick and easy to try and you might be lucky.

I was thinking of the system restore as well as an option to try....only takes a few minutes.

I don't understand why re-installing Edius is so time consuming. You don't have to re-install all the older apps and upgrade from there. If you were on 5.51 then reinstall from the 5.0 upgrade disc, enter your serial number for the older version to get it installed then download the updates. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

Also, if she is building lots of custom Edius presets she needs to export them in case this happens again. When I set up a new system I export all my presets and import them to the new system. Then all my systems match. Take all your presets in Edius and put them in a custom folder. Export that folder. When you import all those presets come along at one time. Very simple.

Well, I feel "half stupid". Phyllis took a break, and I sat down at her computer and immediately saw the reason she could not expand the list of individual effects under a folder. It was due to her being in "show effect" mode, with the effects pane on the right of the effects window being too narrow to show the icons. EEEEE Gads!

But her handy-dandy presets are still not back. She'll have to reconstruct them....which she was already doing as she works on her current project. I showed her how to export them, and now it will be up to her to discipline herself to do it

I personally have been saving my presets all alone, as you suggested. But my history with personal computers goes so far back that I have a deeply engrained habit of "saving often" and "backing up everything important" as the best insurance in case of system problems.

                Thanks for taking the time....

Sometimes the answer is too obvious. :).

Yes she needs to save her presets and export them. If you have some presets she could use just export them and let her import and start from there. After she does a project and creates the presets again she will be good to go. Shouldn't be that time consuming....just annoying.

Maybe after she does the first project you should send her on an errand and then go to her computer and export them for her. LOL

                    Hi Philip,

I usually back up the entire System drive, but have never backed up or exported all my EDIUS presets - which is probably a much less time consuming process. However, I'm not sure I know how to do this. Can't you outline the procedure for those of us who should but don't?
                    Many thanks,

Simple...build your preset. Rename your preset so it means something. Right click on the preset and select export. It will prompt you for a place to export them. Find your preferred folder and export.

Even better, put all your presets in a single custom effects folder. I would name it something like AlansStuff. Once all your presets are there right click on the folder and export. Then when you import it you will get all your presets already in the folder you like.

That's what I've been doing. I created a folder called "Custom Presets" and placed my customized presets in them as I invented them. I also have a folder called "Project Presets" where I put customized presets that I anticipate I will need only for active projects. These come and go, while the ones in "Custom Presets" I anticipate I will use indefinitely.

I export these preset folders any time I make an addition or deletion to a folder on my network "Library" drive, which gets backed up every night (incremetal backup). In theory, it will take hell freezing over before I lose my most valued, often used presets.

Now hopefully, Phyllis will start doing the same. I showed her how.....
