  • Problem with preset for 1080P 60fps

Hey guys, I have a Sanyo FH1 HD cam and it can shoot in a couple of mode. It output MP4 files.

    1. FULL HR 1920x1080 60fps
    2. FULL HD 1920x1080 60 field/s (60i)

Normally I would shoot with the second mode, because it offer great picture for Arial Video using rc model helicopter.

On project preset, I set it to 1920x1080 59.94i (this is correct right?) However, then I import a video clip into the bin, then I click on property and in there it's showing the clip on 29fps. If I change this, then the video get all mess up (speed up). It seem Edius already convert my video to 30fps as soon as import it in.

To make matter worse, I tried the FULL HR video and when I import it in.. it now show 59.94fps under properties... BUT it would only play sound, no video just a green screen.

    What am I doing wrong?

60i is 29.97 fps by convention. 2 fields equals a frame and there are 60 fields per second . Hence 30 fps or in drop frame 29.97. There is a difference between the timecode and the exposure rate. For both the 60P and 60i the camera is taking pictures at the same rate. In one case recording the full frame and in the other just a field( half the vertical resolution).

        No! It's not correct!

        No, EDIUS doesn't doing it!
59,94i means 59,94 fields per second will be used, not frames!
Since 2 fields from an interlaced source will be stored in 1 full frame 29.976 (29.97 called in EDIUS) is the correct frame base!

EDIT: Ron was a bit faster.... ;)

Oh boy.. first I really appreciate that you guys reply. But for a novince like me, now I'm even more confuse.

You're telling me, all this time, my camcorder was not recording at 60 frames per second at all... This is very important since doing Areial there's a lot of vibration and un-smooth movement... I was intended to shoot on 60p and slow it down to get a better video.

What about the FULL HR mode? it said 60fps? is this mean it's actual 60 frame per second? But for some reason I could not edit this in Edius, only sound and green screen video. What should I set the project preset at? And how can I do slomo?

A bit more detail explaination for a noob please.. project preset for both shooting mode and how to slowmo?

          Thanks a bunch.

The correct preset for 1920x1080i is 59.94i. This is the same as 29.97 but not the same as 29.97P. Progressive video at 30P has half the exposure rate per sec as 60i or 60P so the motion will not be as smooth.

Put your interlace video in a 1920x1080i 59.97i preset. That is correct for AVCHD etc. If you look at file properties for an interlaced video file it will say 29.97fps that is also correct as I explained in my first post, so don't change this. The temporal rate is the same for 60i and 60P they will have the same smoothness. The 60P video will have twice the data since it records the whole frame rather than just a field each time. But both record at 60 exposures a second. A still image from the progressive video will yield a better picture because of this.

Don't know about 1920x1080P60 as there isn't a preset for that but maybe one of the progressive presets can be modified. Try modifying a 1280x720P60 preset.

              Hey Ron,

I think I might have an idea on how these thing work. I used a GoPro and shoot at 720p 60fps. I open a project and set preset at 720p 60fps, then import a clip to the Bin, in there under property it's showing 59.4fps. Then if I change it to 29fps, then it play slow motion very nicely. So this work.

But my question now lay on, does my Sanyo FH1 1920 x 1080p 60fps HR is indeed actually shooting 60p. Under my computer when I look at properties for both shooting file... detail all say they are 60fps.

I have attached a 10seconds clip shooting at 1920x1080p 60p HR, can you guys check it out? see if you can import it to Edius and slow it down? Is this 60fps or field per seconds?

              Thanks

It is 60 frames per sec progressive as expected.

What is puzzling is that on this email PC I have Edius 5.51 which can see and play the file which ever preset I put it into. On my editing machine with Edius V6.02 it just flashes green every so often. I know the file is Ok as it will play in Vegas 10. I have got the latest Quicktime that doesn't seem to make any difference!!!

Ron, I think you nailed it...

I am indeed using Edius 6... so there's a problem with the software itself..?

Can someone email the right people to get this fix? Or someone know how to fix this?

I would love to be able to shoot 60fps and edit it, this is why I bought went to Edius in the first place.

                  :(

It is Quicktime issue I think. I just recoded the mp4 file with TMPGenc to WMV and it imports and plays just fine in Edius V6. Mail support and asks them what to do. The mp4 file plays fine also in Vegas 10 32bit or 64bit versions. So this is an Edius issue as Vegas also uses Quicktime I think.

                      It's the same issue here!
Btw Quicktime & EDIUS told me the file uses 59,94 fps progressive!
I think it's not an QT issue. QT shows the file & plays smooth.

Could someone email and bring this issue to the right person for me? As i don't really know who to contact about this.

Yes all my programs also show correctly 59.94fps too. Vegas will play, so will Edius V5.51 but Edius V6 will not play. V6 reports file correctly and will show the first frame but then shows green screen.

I am surprise that no one ran across this problem? No one edit 1920x1080p 60fps by MP4?

Or is it just my particular camcorder is outputting a weird MP4 codec file?
