  • HDV to Blu-Ray best method?

This might be a very stupid question.....but is there a best way to edit PAL HDV (1440 x 1080i) and transfer to Blu-Ray?

Do I need to up convert or de-interlace to get a better quality if the end result is to be shown on a 1920 x 1080 screen?

    I am using Edius 5.51

with HDV footage I use it in a 1920x1080 50i Project setting and mix with 1920x1080 AVCHD and cannot tell the difference, there seems to be no need to upscale or de interlace, from memory HDV is interlaced anyway
If your footage was 1280p then you will need to upscale with VirtualDub as Edius seems to be unable to do this correctly and jaggies will appear
Not as bad as adding SD but they are there

      John,
I think you might be surprised at what it looks like on BD. It is going to be a 1440x1080 50i project. You would have to go to 1280x720 for 50p.

This may help you. Go to section 4.6

      http://www.hughsnews.ca/faqs/authori...ifications#4.1

All you will ever need, or want to know, for that matter.

What I have always done is on capture convert my HDV footage to 1920x1080.
I find it easier to work in square pixel format. I don't have to remember to change aspect ratio on graphics. Hate having to remember things like that.

The projects that I have put out on BD have all been shot interlaced. On playback, at least here in the US, it looks stunning. While watching the disc, it never crosses my mind that I should have gone progressive.AKA 1280x720.

Interlaced sources should not been deinterlaced if not needed (as in a progressive project) because more artifacts will appear & motion will lost.

The resolution does not need any change! It's part of the spec & EDIUS will burn a BluRay disc:

When you are deciding to do your project you need to think about the final format that it will be delivered. If it is to be 1280x720, it is best to shoot in that format. If it is 1920x1080, it is best in that format. You can leave it native 1440x1080, and edit in that setting with Edius. Export to whatever authoring
program you use and create a disc.
I find one consistent resolution and frame rate make final deliveries much cleaner and hassle free.
As I said, I prefer the square pixel format and choose to capture to 1920x1080. This is done on my Intensity Pro card. (The uncompressed and MJPEG formats both work fine in Edius).
I have been burning BD's since 2006, and it is by far easier now than then...and cheaper. I remember BD blanks being $40 on release. BD-re was not readily available until 2007. So, playing around got expensive.
Try to read most of the info on the link. It is mostly boring, but use the index to get what you need to learn and stick to it. Deviating from specs will result in a very expensive coaster.

I would use 1440X1080 60i Edius project and encode to Blu-ray, it is much sharper than if you switch your project to 1902x1080 60i, just park your playhead on something with much detail and switch your timeline and you will see what I'm talking about, beside 1440X1080 60i is blu-ray spec.
