  • Working with 4:3 and 16:9

    Hey,

Two cameras took the same footage (different angles)... so what I want to do is use the camera with the widescreen footage as the "main footage" and the 4:3 footage as a picture in picture.

    How to do this?

I mean I have edited the parts I need from the 4:3 footage (when I started the project I choose 720x576, 4:3 and 25 frames a sec).
Do I need to export each little clip from this and then start the a new project for the widescreen one (720x576 as well, but 16:9 and (two tapes) 25 frames a sec and 29 frames a sec).

As you can see, quite a bit confused.

    Thanks!
    Using Edius 6.01.
    Machine 1:(NEW) Intel i7 3,4GHZ (OC'ed to 4.4GHZ), 16GB RAM,60GB SSD, EVGA 1GB graphics card. Win7 Ultimate (64 bit). Two 22" monitors.
    Machine 2: Laptop, Intel i5 (4 cores), 4gb RAM.Win7 Ultimate (64 bit).
Real men use PCs not fruits or what goes under a baby's butt... ;o)

Learning Edius & working on a project at the same time (best way to learn!).

Simple...the easiest way I can think of is to use the Layouter tool (in version 6) or the layout tool in previous versions. Put your 4:3 clip on a track over the 16:9 clip. Use the layouter to resize the 4:3 to the right PnP size and position. Not need for extra clips created. Super easy to do. The 3D PnP also works and has more features if you are still in a version 5.? However the 3D PnP does not have as much real time playback so you may need to render the timeline occasionally.

      Hey!
Yes, I know I should use the layouter (this was explained to me in another thread)

I mean I am a bit confused as to getting the footage from the different cameras into one project... as I set the first project to 25 frames and 4:3 if I import footage that has 29 frames a sec and 16:9 wont that screw things up?

Set you project to whatever resolution and framerate you want to output.

EDIUS will let you mix clips of different rates and aspect ratios within the project and up/downscale and convert framerates on the clips as needed.

Ah! That clears up things a bit!

(Thought perhaps I had to render each subclip then import it into the project where I would use it as a PiP - glad I don't need to do that!)

Now that I have started the first tape on 4:3 and 25 FPS but I want to output 16:9 29FPS... how/where do I change that?

Ok, went to project settings, current settings.

New problem: I see 720x576 and 16:9 but only options are 25FPS and 50i... no 29FPS.

What to do? Take the lower or higher? If I take the lower wont it drop frames?

Just change your project settings to what you want and you are good to go. Super easy to do it.

Like others already told you Edius works with anything you toss at it. If it's a 4x3 project and you load a 16X9 clip it will automatically letterbox it. It just works....remember you're not dealing with Adobe or FCP....Edius just works. :-)

If you want to change the Project settings from PAL 25 to NTSC 30 you will need to start a new project
All your files are still on disk so import them into your new project in NTSC (I take it that is what you want to output) and mix and match your files
I don't know if you can import your work so far in PAL 25 in to an NTSC project (Have not tried) but worth a look at

                  Thanks Phillip!

                  Hey Barry!

I did not get an answer here for a while so I just went and changed the 4:3, 25FPS to 16:9 50i and put the new footage in a different sequence to make it easier to work with
still cutting up the widescreen footage so will tell ya how that goes. If it does not work will do the steps you wrote.

Thanks for replying guys, and have a peaceful day!

Wouldnt be too surprised if a certain fruity company sued for "Edius... it just works".

Since IOS 4.2.1 my fruit phone boots down once a month or so for no apparent reason.
I never have this issue (or any remotely related issues) with Edius, so the 'slogan' is based on facts in my book :)

I do however like how my fruit phone centers the screen when I edit !

Clearly your fault. You must have not held it right.

Either that or its a feature.

Also, while a fruit is a fruit... a robot (or 'droid crushes) fruit... :P
