Hi Jim.
I think you may find that Tektronix format is bespoke and not a standard. If memory serves me well, HD for film and tv was only ever deigned to work at a screen aspect of 16:9. When you have a 4:3 picture in the HD world, it is just placed in the middle of a 16:9 background. This will have a lot of wasted pixels either side, weather at 720 or 1080. Although this center 4:3 image on a 720 background looks to be 960x720, this should not be mistaken for the anamorphic variation of 720. I could be wrong, but all HD is 1:1 pixel aspect and 16:9 screen aspect, and 720x576 with 1:1 pixel aspect is neither a HD format or a legal PAL standard.
Cheers.
Dave.

Just checked my Tektronix HD format chart and they listed a 4:3 HD (720 x 576 pixels) format as 625/50/1:1 Progressive with 625 total lines per frame.
I will check to see if this appears from the output of my Edius Thunder (almost Storm 3G) card.

Before there is any confusion the list has to do with out of the installed GV hardware not with export.
Thus what you can send out to a connected panel (realtime) and NOT what you can export (file based).Leave a comment:

Just anothert query about SD/HD PAL. From memory there is a preset for 720 50P (4:3) which doesn't appear on the list.
I have used this for outputting a stream of stills of each indivisual field from standard PAL video by converting a project from 50i to 50P (and it worked really well).
Interestingly I have heard it said that anything above 720 50/60i is regarded as HD so perhaps this information belongs on the HD part of the document. Even more confusing!
Jim
720 is a HD format and does not come in 4:3 format, this would be why it is not the list as 720 50P 4:3. For PAL, it's only 576 that has a legal aspect of 4:3.

While I do know the answers to these questions I will check with engineering before I post the official answer. :)
It might take a few days.Leave a comment:

Thanks GV for that very useful document. I often promote the use of Edius with my colleagues who need an NLE for their research work. I have to explain that Edius needs to be told what format they need when they begin a project and this leads to a discussion of HD formats out there. They do find it confusing so any material like this is a great help.

Hi Steve thanks for the link... but can you tell us why there is no option for monitoring native 1280x720/23.98p or 23.976p as Dave correctly points out.
The only project option is for OHCI and this cannot be monitored via the GV hardware cards....it is a common enough format so what is the reasoning behind this lack of support?
Best

There is new document available which give a comparison between
the HDSPARK,HDSPARK PRO, HDSTORM, STORM3G/3G ELITE.
This gives a a good overview what each board is capable of outputting and what cannot. (thus will use software preview)
