I changed aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3.

I can't believe that green line surround chapter button appear on Pioneer DVD player and Sony Bluray Player.

Then, I change aspect ratio form 4:3 to 16:9, and burn DVD on very same condition. I can't see green line.

    Why this things happen?

      Hi motoaki.

This seems to suggest that Edius is only making one overlay. There should be 2, 1 for 4:3 and one for 16:9.

Sorry I can't help any further.

      Dave.

          Hi motoaki.

Can you try another test. Turn your Edius project to 4:3, use the same type of menu with same type of borders as before, then burn the project as 4:3

When a DVD is being authored, any shapes or txt overlays that are being used to highlight buttons or txt, are turned into a flat graphic. This grapchic is anti aliased, and is used as a way for the playback DVD to plot the positions and colour map for overlays in it's 2D graphic generator.

There are two types created, one for 16:9 and one for 4:3. When a DVD is only 4:3 video, the legal DVD requirement is for only a 4:3 overlay for the menu. When the video and menu are 16:9, you have to have both. This means that either a Pan and Scan or Letterbox version of the 16:9 menu must be created, for playback compatibilty on a 4:3 screen.

It sounds like there maybe a problem with the overlays being created for both formats. A 4:3 only test could help to see if this is the case.

Could an admin comment on this.

          Cheers.

          Dave.

            I found the problem

when a DVD player is set for TV type 4:3 or 4:3 pan and scan, the overlay does not work with a 16:9 authored disk

            1. do you have a 4:3 TV or 16:9 TV

            2. can you check DVD player setup menu and report what the TV type setting is? mine is set to 16:9 original, this allows me to see correct 16:9 and 4:3 authored disks

              Hi Anton.

That's interesting. When the target aspect is set wrong on the player, you should still see menu and overlay but in the wrong aspect ratio. It looks like you may have found an issue with the burn to disc, it sounds like it only makes one aspect overlay in 16:9.

              Cheers.

              Dave.

I have had another look at the exporter, and can't find an option for the 4:3 setting of menus when in a 16:9 project. Unless I can't find the option or have got it wrong, it would suggest that the exporter does not do a seperate 4:3 menu for 16:9 content.

Could an admin verify if this is the case or not.

                  Thanks.

it appears Edius creates an empty subpicture for the letter box aspect ratio

                      Hi Anton.

Does it actualy create the background, and if so is it letterbox or pan scan?

                      Cheers.

the following images are measured in Photoshop

tool used for extracting sub pictures is DVDSubEdit1.51

here is what the test project menu looks like

here is what widescreen subpicture looks like

here is what pan & scan subpicture looks like, it is blank

I reply late, sorry for this.

I made exactly the same DVD as you say above quote.

I found no problem at all. I check with 4:3 TV, by using Pioneer DVD player on Pan and Scan, Letter Box, and 16:9 mode. The DVD menu works well all three modes.

But, onece I changed from 4:3 to 16:9 on "Burn to disk." Selected button in DVD menu never change its color. (I mean that Edius projects still keep in 4:3.)

That means, as you, Dave, said before, 16:9 menu has some trouble. That's what I think.

please feel free to tell me, if you do not understand my English. I will re write what I want to say as possible as I can.

                          Thank you, Dave and Anton!

                            Hi Anton

I have both 4:3 trinitron, and 16:9 HD TV.

As you say, 16:9 TV type setting in Pioneer DVD player, DVD menu works well. But, once I changed TV type setting to Pan and Scan or Letter Box, the green line around chapter button(I burned DVD with cursor stlyle "Border" in "Burn to disk") is gone.

this is caused by the blank subpicture, I will forward these findings to the correct people

Both 4:3 and 16:9 Edius projects' motion menu works well. As long as if you burn DVD 4:3 on "Burn to disk".
