24P HDV - capture settings

a couple days ago i had a big problem with stutter in my footage and found it to be that i captured it to edius 6 incorrectly. even though i had 24p footage on my hdv tape , i didnt realize that i had to set the capture settings to 24p aswell. I thought edius would automatically detect that. its no biggie , now that i have capturing partially figured out.


my question is that there is two 24p capture settings to choose from. one said 23.98p over 60i <--- which i used and created no stutter and the other option is 23.98p A (something) over 60i . havent tried it yet. but will tonight just to see what it does or how it looks.

im looking for the settings in the manual and the manual is sooo big im finding it hard to find.

also , if i capture it in HQ that is considered 8 bit right? and HQX is 10 bit? if i capture it in HQX does this mean im editing it in 10bit?

anyone know the difference in capturing 23.98P from an HDV device from these two presets?

1440x1080 23.98p over 59.94i
or
1440x1080 23.98pA over 59.94i , which one should I use? why isnt there just 23.98p? im wondering if over 59.94i means the tape.


Any info of this is much appreciated ,

Usually you want to use the setting that the material was shot at... or where /how you intend to deliver it. If it was shot at 24p and not 24pA.. use the 24p over 59i. The "A" stands for advanced it applies a 2:3:3:2 pull down cadence. 24p is a 2:3 pulldown. 59i means that the 24p (23.976 fps) video is placed in a 60 field interlaced stream.

24pA shot material is the best for film transfers... because of the pulldown cadence it allows for a more accurate 24fps that film uses.

If you didn't shoot p"A" use the 24p over 59i setting.

NOTE: I edited my post because I shoot with JVC which is true 24 frame. Not 23.98 as your canon does. You will use a 23.98 timeline because it isn't true 24fps.

Canon doesn't actually use a true progressive sensor, it's interlaced and than it's interpolated and that is why it's called 24f. I'm pretty sure it is handled just as 23.98p is although. After a quick search I found this "The A1 has an option in-menu to record 24f in either 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown."

I shoot true HDV 24p and edit in a true 24 timeline with Edius.

i did some searching , your right its not true 24p but it does 24f pretty well. I also found out the canon has a 2:3:3:2 or 2:3 setting for only SD not HD. So im thinking that for HD it is 2:3 only

That is the way i understand it as well... So just use the 23.98 over 60i for HDV and you should be good to go.
