  • Realtime Performance Issues/Questions

Ok... So I have always had nothing but realtime editing however many streams of DVCPRO HD 720/1080. I could do color correction, transitions, 4 layers of 3d PiP, etc. The only thing I couldn't do in realtime was 3d transitions basically...

I seem to have noticed a slow down in EDIUS after the upgrade. While I have not been able to delve really deeply, the difference is enough that it is noticeable on the surface.

Examples include one track of 1080/24pa DVCPRO HD with old movie filter applied for a few seconds of the track. Just grain was added to the filter.... Lose real time. Playback stops.

Things seem slower in 720p/24pn as well.

Title Motion Pro has completely lost real time performance. I opened up an SD project that had an intro title composed in title motion pro. EDIUS choked on it. Playback stopped.

I decided to do an uninstall and a fresh install of EDIUS 4.5, and a fresh install of TitleMotion Pro.... Still having the same issues...

Any ideas that I might check out?

I should add that I did a reformat of my system drive a couple of weeks ago. If anything, though... my system is running more efficiently than before... Also didn't notice really a problem with 4.24. Had a one minute promo reel in 720p/24pn DVCPRO HD that I was cutting that worked fine. Had title motion pro and it was realtime...

EDIUS has not become completely useless, and the realtime performance hasn't gone completely down the tubes, but it has taken quite a noticeable hit.

    Thanks very much,
    Jason

I've tried them all... For playback it's set at 15 frames. For RT Buffer in the hardware settings, It's set at 128. I've tried them max, but no difference. With a 1080 project the buffer shows 30 frames (in the lower left corner). And, I've had it maxed where it was 140 something for 1080. almost 600 for SD.

I've also had issue with the audio mixer (but only since the update). I read the thread about that earlier, but have never experienced that issue until now. The audio mixer messes with things enough that footage stutters and audio becomes occasionally 'glitchy'.. Before, I edited a 30 minute project that the audio mixer was used on a lot, not an issue. Now, that same project chokes a bit (but doesn't stop) with the audio mixer open.

All of the issues mentioned above, however the audio mixer was off...

Anyways, just trying to figure out if there is something I can do on my end to resolve the issue, as it was not one before.

      thanks,
      Jason

I assume you use a 1280X1080 project right?

My buffer setting is 183 when using that.

The mixer has always worked as it did in 4.51.

Can you check your project settings?

When you playback with the audio mixer on, two things happen:

          1) the buffer is disabled
          2) the 'stop playback at frame drop' setting is ignored and playback will persist

The glitchy audio etc, is a result of EDIUS persevering with playback despite being unable to properly playback the sequence in realtime (sans buffer).

While it doesn't explain your drop in performance (which is a little puzzling), it may at least explain the behaviour of things while the mixer is open.

SR: Yes. 1280x1080 for DVCPRO 1080, and 960x720 for DVCPRO HD 720p. I am using the same project settings I have always used and without issue (in the past).

Kenneally: Thanks, that makes sense. However, the part that 'puzzles' me, is that this was never an issue before...

The other thing that is quite concerning is the loss in realtime performance when playing over title motion pro tracks, and other tracks with minor effects added, that before I could do ten times as much and still not have a hit in realtime...

I just don't know if there are some things I can be looking at as far as my system configuration goes, that *could* possibly be different from before the reformat, or if the issue is related to 4.5... Just something I want to figure out, obviously :)

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Have you tried going into the Hardware Settings and trying the other renderer (DirectDraw vs. Direct3D)? You need to restart Edius after making the change, BTW.

I started to try that earlier, but I think I got off track and forgot... hang on a sec.....

Yep, I have, and forgot... I just toggled between both again, and no change.

I also just opened up an older project. DVCPRO HD 720p/24pn Two cameras. two tracks. 41 minutes long. multicam. When in multicam, I do still have realtime (with no effects or cc or anything on any of the clips) but the buffer is pretty scary. It's hanging around 2-4 out of 31 with current settings... Not something I had before, or at least noticed before.

                Thanks,
                Jason

Where did you get your 4.5 upgrade?

A bunch of people downloaded the file when it first became available about 36 hours ago before the server tanked, and some downloaded it from the Limelight Networks location where the file was actually being hosted, but that too is gone now.

The Canopus Japan server has the older, flawed V4.5 release. Your only option right now seem to be to wait for Canopus US to fix their server.

My buffer on multi-cam has always hung around the low end (2-3) but it's never affected playback like you would have expected it for some reason.

Yeah, that seems to be the case on multicam... It's not affecting realtime, so that one seems to be ok.

I've just reformatted my editing drives, and done some other things, so I will test Title Motion Pro realtime and the other issues tomorrow I guess. It's late :)

I should note (in case this seems much worse than it is) that my realtime performance isn't dead. For the most part things are still chirping along. But, it does seem to have taken a noticeable hit in a few areas where it had not before...

                        Later,

After doing some more stuff to my system, and reformatting my editing drives as well... things seem a bit better today...

I don't have one 720 project to test the audio mixer issue with, but another 720 project that I still have, it worked fine with... 1080 is still the same issue (but I can't say for certain that this was not always the case with 1080 projects, as I didn't do much work in 1080 until recently). So, it could be that 1080 is starting to push the limits of my system a bit, and that is ok, and to be expected.

There does seem to be issues with title motion pro though. I saw it mentioned that a patch was in the works for this, so I guess that is a known issue. Particularly with older projects that had title motion pro titles in it. I opened up an old 720 project and EDIUS would crash everytime... So, I shall await a patch for that to hopefuly resolve the issue.

Things seem to be chirping along nicely though, barring a few things. Mainly projects with title motion pro usage.

                          Thanks,
                          Jason

Is loss of realtime with Title Motion Pro compositions part of the known issues that the coming patch is supposed to address?

I have just realized I have lost realtime completely with titlemotion pro on the timeline with anything beyond simple fade in fade out. Whether new or old. I have a one second clip on the timeline and EDIUS chokes on it...

                            Thanks,

There is a crash that's going to be fixed...as far as RT for TMPro titles, it's working fine for me...even with Rolls and Crawls. I rarely use Animation settings, so I can't comment on that if you're having trouble.
