  • Massive Crash Resets GUI

During a render my entire system powered off.

Restart Edius and the GUI Buttons are reset to default!

Not sure what went on here.

Hmmm...rendering means heavy cpu load. Maybe you just encountered a problem with your psu?

Are you sure your system crashed? If that had happened and Edius didn't simply close, you'd either be looking at a BSOD, or your system would have restarted itself, depending on what the Recovery option is set to in the System applet in the Control Panel. The system would NOT simply shut down.

A more likely explanation is that you had a brief power problem (blackout / brownout). Only systems that have the BIOS configured appropriately will turn back on after power is restored, otherwise the system will stay off.

Crash was probably not the right term, it was a power shutdown. I may need to look into possble overheating. (I just recieved a new ZALMAN CNPS9500 CPU fan)

Battery Backup should have (and has in the past) managed local power issues.

If you already installed the new heatsink, it may not be making good contact -- did you apply a thermal paste? There are programs out there that monitor and display CPU temperatures, I would use that to keep an eye on the system until you can rule out a problem in this area.

Also, some BIOSes allow you to configure a CPU clockspeed reduction or system shutdown when a critical temperature is reached. That could also explain the symptoms.

Finally, current Intel and AMD processors will automatically throttle back to prevent system damage that can result from overheating, but if the BIOS has a threshold that is set lower than that, your system could potentially turn off before the processor has a chance to slow down and reduce the heat it generates.

I know from experience that my home system ran ~5 degrees (celcius) cooler simply by checking and levelling the heatsink..

              Thanks guys,
Yes, new paste. I thought I set a BIOS alarm, maybe shutdown too. I'll see.
I'm running the (noisy) stock fan that came with my Q6700. The ZALMAN goes on sooooon!

              Cross your fingers, Rusty

GUI/layout settings are generally only saved on (normal) exit of EDIUS... so if you make changes then it exits disgracefully, then things will be as if you didn't make those changes.

Moral of the story: Exit to save GUI/Layout changes, or save your Layout if it's a Layout thing.
