Having taught Adobe software to aspiring graphic designers, I am familiar with the hesitancy for people to use the keyboard in addition to the mouse.

What I did was ask them what their left hand (or right, for the lefties) was doing while they worked? Nothing if you don't know any shortcuts! That's inefficient and downright silly when trying to use something like the pen tool in Illustrator or After Effects.

You can blame Adobe and Avid if you don't like it. Those 2 companies spent considerable time and resources to determine that a designer/editor can be more productive when they put their other hand to use. Media Composer experts don't even use the mouse most times, since they can play that software like a piano using both hands on the keyboard.

Factor in the lack of a second mouse button on a Mac (in the "olden" days 4 years ago) and using the keyboard was/is even more necessary.

That being said, the new interface of Edius hasn't bothered me at all. At least the icons are in the same place :-)

Check out the ability to change the colour of the interface background!!

Settings > Customize > Window Color (bottom in the list)

I'm doing a purple haze right now!

I'm with the "Keyboard Crew", I probably use the keyboard for around 80% of my editing, it really is much faster.

Don't mind the user interface either, has a more modern look to it.

Just hope GV can sort out the gremlins!

I second that. However, I would like the 4.5c update to actually work. Edius 4.5c crashes on my machine right after startup. Used to work fine with 4.24, though. Edius NX (PCI-X) + expansion board, Supermicro PDSGE MoBO, Pentium D 3,2 GHz, Radeon X850 XT, Rocket RAid. 2 Gb DDR533 Ram.
    Any ideas ??

Well if you dislike Edius so much because of it's GUI, then I think you need to switch. Like I said earlier, I've never seen a pro editor who does not use a keyboard. No one who does this for a living hovers over icons...it's all Space/JKL/Arrow Keys etc.

Once you get into using the 'silly keyboard commands', you will be able to work much faster, and much more efficiently. That's how most editors work. One hand on the mouse, the other on the keyboard. You can set up the keyboard shortcuts however you like... You should try to start getting into the habit of using them. Plus, what about things there aren't buttons for? Better to just be able to press a key when need be.

In my opinion, the GUI looks good, but it's not for everyone. If the GUI is scaring you away, I think you need to back up a bit and look at it from a different point of view.

I am no pro, and i have never used the silly keyboard commands. i would rather use icons, so i guess i too would be of the mind that to leave them alone is good.

dude ... seriously?? you're griping about the icons? what was so great about the old icons?? and since when did the icons matter? overall its a pretty slick new interface, different, but not bad. can't wait for the rest of their apps to get th eoverhaul too ... you should take a look at Aurora, it looks like something out of a Fischer Price catalog! (lets hope they seriously revisit the functionality of that too, its laughable)
as already noted, professionals drive the software from the keyboard and/or direct manipulation in the timeline. clicking icons is guaranteed to slow you down so learn the keyboard (the new keyboard layout view for keyboard shortcut mapping is a godsend for that too)... that said, if you can get real real quick with the mouse and/or pen and tablet, and you can drive the thing in a whirr of mouse clicks, well that can seem pretty darn impressive to a client :)

A software is about icons? I thought it's all about functionality and stability.
