  • Disappointment with Edius 4.5

Come on guys -- I finally thought Edius was getting to a point where it was usable for everyone and now you go and put rediculous icons for the IN and OUT functions and other buttons -- like the play button? If I wanted it to be confusing I would have gone with AVID.

    Do you do usability testing?

I mean seriously finally you put FILE EDIT VIEW etc. and now you go ahead and change the button icons?

I mean I thought it was rediculous that you changed the match cut quick key with the jump from 3 to 4 -- but now an icon change across the board?

    I just don't get it.

Most pro editors (Avid, FCP, PPro) use keyboards anyways....who cares about the In/Out icons?

In my opinion, the GUI looks good, but it's not for everyone. If the GUI is scaring you away, I think you need to back up a bit and look at it from a different point of view.

We do a lot of usablility testing :)

This is the new look and feel of ALL Grass Valley Software. Edius is the first to get the uplift :)

A software is about icons? I thought it's all about functionality and stability.

dude ... seriously?? you're griping about the icons? what was so great about the old icons?? and since when did the icons matter? overall its a pretty slick new interface, different, but not bad. can't wait for the rest of their apps to get th eoverhaul too ... you should take a look at Aurora, it looks like something out of a Fischer Price catalog! (lets hope they seriously revisit the functionality of that too, its laughable)
as already noted, professionals drive the software from the keyboard and/or direct manipulation in the timeline. clicking icons is guaranteed to slow you down so learn the keyboard (the new keyboard layout view for keyboard shortcut mapping is a godsend for that too)... that said, if you can get real real quick with the mouse and/or pen and tablet, and you can drive the thing in a whirr of mouse clicks, well that can seem pretty darn impressive to a client :)

I think that also for us users who have been with it since version 1, its not such a quick change - its not unwelcome as far as I am concerned - I like 4.5 with its Darth Vader look!

Check out the ability to change the colour of the interface background!!

Settings > Customize > Window Color (bottom in the list)

I'm doing a purple haze right now!

I am no pro, and i have never used the silly keyboard commands. i would rather use icons, so i guess i too would be of the mind that to leave them alone is good.

Once you get into using the 'silly keyboard commands', you will be able to work much faster, and much more efficiently. That's how most editors work. One hand on the mouse, the other on the keyboard. You can set up the keyboard shortcuts however you like... You should try to start getting into the habit of using them. Plus, what about things there aren't buttons for? Better to just be able to press a key when need be.

Well if you dislike Edius so much because of it's GUI, then I think you need to switch. Like I said earlier, I've never seen a pro editor who does not use a keyboard. No one who does this for a living hovers over icons...it's all Space/JKL/Arrow Keys etc.

                          That's true.
Keyboard is king for pro editors.

I second that. However, I would like the 4.5c update to actually work. Edius 4.5c crashes on my machine right after startup. Used to work fine with 4.24, though. Edius NX (PCI-X) + expansion board, Supermicro PDSGE MoBO, Pentium D 3,2 GHz, Radeon X850 XT, Rocket RAid. 2 Gb DDR533 Ram.
                            Any ideas ??

I'm with the "Keyboard Crew", I probably use the keyboard for around 80% of my editing, it really is much faster.

Don't mind the user interface either, has a more modern look to it.

Just hope GV can sort out the gremlins!
