  • Adjust Preview Window Display?

I could have sworn there were some settings that allowed you to alter the brightness of the Preview window in Edius 4.24. I have looked but can't find these settings.

The display of video is considerably darker in the Preview window than the image looks if, for example, I export a still or AVI file. I would like to adjust the Preview window so it more closely matches the output.

    Do these settings exist?

    Thanks!
    Sincerely,

    Mike Truly

You can adjust the gamma and other settings in the control panel applet for your video card, Edius uses the hardware video overlay for the Preview window.

      THoff,

Thanks. I knew there was somewhere where I had done it before. Strange thing is, I hadn't changed the display on this system so I wonder why it appears darker now. I'll look into it.

      Thanks again.
      Sincerely,

OK, now it seems to be that the problem is that the Nvidia overlay settings are not consistently being used in my Edius4.24.

For example, I start Edius and see that the preview window looks too dark. I open the Nvidia controls (and the instant I do - which switches focus from Edius to another app, the Edius preview display of the image is brighter and exactly what it should be). Even though the displayed Edius image looks correct, I know it's because focus has shifted and as soon as I go back to Edius... it's dark again.

So I go ahead and adjust the Nvidia overlay to make it brighter. When I go back to Edius, now the preview image is brighter as desired. Problem is, later when re-starting Edius, the preview window is shown as dark again and I have to go back into the Nvidia settings to goose it to be bright again. This is on a QuadroFX 3400.

Anyone seen this type of behavour before?

        Thanks!
        Sincerely,

        Mike Truly

Is the NVIDIA control panel saving your settings? Or trashing them each reboot?

            Kenneally,

The Nvidia settings ARE being saved. Each time I revisit the Nvidia dialog, the curve I created there for the Overlay is still there.

I just tested again. Did a re-boot, checked the Nvidia settings... curve is there for overlay. Closed the dialog. Opened Edius4.24. Image is dark.

Opened Nvidia dialog, changed nothing... clicked OK. Dialog closes and Edius image gets bright as desired. Image will stay bright during session but will change back to dark upon next Edius restart. Also, if I start Print to File>Procoder2 from Edius, when PC2 is done or I cancel the PC2 window, Edius image goes dark again.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but the overlay settings just won't stick.

            Thanks!
            Sincerely,

            Mike Truly

Your system is using NX right? Does this weirdness happen if you do some tests in Generic OHCI mode? (ie. bypass EDIUS hardware)

                Kenneally,

Yes I am using NX and it does do the same thing when I switch project settings from the 720p settings to an SD OCHI mode setting. I just tested it.

I switched settings... saved project... restarted Edius... opened SD project... image dark... Nvidia settings-OK...Edius image gets bright...restart Edius and reopened SD project... image dark again.

                Thanks!

                  Oh dear..

Starting to get outside the realm of my knowledge - have you talked to the guys in Tech about this? They may have some 'canopus.ini' tweaks to try and resolve the issue.

                    Kenneally,

I think I may have isolated this further to some problem with the Nvidia settings.

Not only do the settings not stick in Edius, but they also don't stick in Media Player or Media Player Classic (and probably other apps).

If I open the apps, the Nvidia settings aren't working... click OK, they work. Close the apps and re-open, the settings aren't working again. Seems the settings aren't sticking.

What's weird is I have changed nothing on this system in ages. Not sure why it would change. Will explore further.

                    Thanks!
                    Sincerely,

What version of forceware drivers are you running on the graphics board?

                      Might need to rollback..

(contrary to some beliefs, NVIDIA driver releases aren't always flawless)

                        Kenneally,

I'm currently using ver 91.36. It may be that an older version would correct this. I'll look into it.

                        Thanks!

NVIDIA's site gives the full listing of hardware vendors and their version numbers to check. You might even be able to pull down an NVIDIA reference driver to double-check things.

                            Kenneally,

I got the problem fixed. Here's what I did. I installed the latest Nvidia drivers 91.85. Now the settings are sticking in all apps. Must have been a problem with previous driver.

But here's something weird. It seems like every time I download a driver revision from Nvidia, they have decided to change their contol app design. They have done so again with the 91.85 drivers. So naturally, they are unfamiliar to me. Specifically, they have changed to a webpage like control app. When you finally get to the video settings, now they offer a bunch of sliders for controlling things as well as the familiar graph on a different tab. There is one page of settings for desktop colors and another page for video colors. On the desktop color page, there is a preview picture shown next to the controls. On the video color page where the preview picture should be, there is nothing and above it it says 'video overlay disabled'. When I grab, for example, the brightness slider and bump it up, the brightness changes in Media Player Classic which is also open. This is wonderful and wasn't happening before with the older driver for some reason.

Wonder why it's saying 'video overlay disabled'? Seems like these controls are working and Edius now uses the adjusted settings.

                            Thanks!
                            Sincerely,

                            Mike Truly

In the end, I reverted back to an older Nvidia driver 84.36 as I liked the overlay controls there better than the newer version so now all seems to be working.
