  • burn to dvd 24p question

I have a project that is 1080/24p that I just need to burn straight from the timeline to SD dvd. Problem is, the only option "burn to dvd" gives me is blu-ray. When I change the project settings to "Generic OCHI SD 24Hz 720 x 480 23.98p over 59.94i 16:9", the burn to dvd option is greyed out. If I start a new project "HQX-E1 SD NTSC 720 x 480 59.94i 16:9 (DVD)" and drop in the 24p clips, it will work, but the resulting footage looks kind of blurry when there's motion as the frames gets blended together.

I know I could use the Virtual Dub method to downconvert but don't want to add in extra steps as I don't need (or want) to mess with a menu/authoring. I just need a straight burn to dvd dub.

What project settings should I use to get this done...? Thanks!

24p footage needs to be shot with shutter on 48
25p footage needs to be shot with shutter on 50
30p footage needs to be shot with shutter on 60

this will produce smoother endresult when there is motion

yes, you need to add the 24p file in 720x480 DVD interlaced project before you can export to DVD

      Anton,

The "blurriness" has nothing to do with the shutter speed. At least, in the scenario I'm talking about. The footage looks fine on a 24p timeline. It's when dropped into a 59.94i project that it started looking blurry with motion.

Is there a project setting I can use to burn directly to dvd or do I need to go the Vdub route...? I'm really trying to avoid the extra steps/time of authoring as I don't need menus, etc. I just need a straight burn to disc. I do understand it has something to do with it being progressive. Is there a way to drop it into an interlaced timeline and burn from there..?

I don't really work with 24p for video, but if the result needs to go to cinema, then 24p may make sense

I am in Pal land and shooting 50i absolutely blows away any progressive look, in my opinion

I have tries 25p with 50 shutter several times, but it still looks crap to me

but I am sure there is a way and I am sure that converting 24p to DVD spec in T4 Xpress will look great, but that is extra steps you don't need

Going to an interlaced output you will need to add pull down on export.

There are threads on this forum covering this I think try a search.

            Hi Lee.

If your footage was shot and edited at 24p HD, and you want to make an NTSC dvd. You will have to down convert your master file first and then do a pull down to get it to 29.97. Edius one way or another can do what you need, but you will indeed see some strange stuff going on, as you have. Many people on the forum have gone over the HD to SD down conversion for MPEG2 for DVD, have a search for these. Although you can mix match frame rates in an Edius time line, for absolute best quality, you would be best going external for your pull down and down conversion.

            Hope this helps.

            Dave.
