a few questions for my fellow edius users.
    1. what do you think fo going with an ssd for the OS vs the standard hd
and ive heard raid 5 will allow backup of data and will perform just as well as raid 0. true? which is the best to go with

  • #2
what is your OS? if not Win7, stay clear of SSD

and if buying SSD, buy the most expensive you can find

I use Raid5, you need minimum 4 drives otherwise you are better off with Raid0

i thought for sure you would have ssd anton. im told the bootup time is faster, what other reasons are there for it. since you have raid 5, is your performance as good as youj would get with raid 0? do you still back up as you edit on externals even though you have raid 5.

the SSD has a fast access time but bootup time is not faster, especially if using a raid card, you need to wait for it to boot

I am not using an SSD on my edit PC, I am using a 320GB WD 24/7 enterprise drive for the C drive

I do not back up anything on the Raid5, only when a project is finished, I place it on another drive in case I need it again in the future, then I delete it from the raid

my Raid5 does 320mb/sec which is 3 times faster than a single Sata II

          SSD

I have an SSD OCZ Vertez 120 Gb. I've had it on my Win7 system for the last year or so.

Windows bootup is very fast and all applications load very fast. I haven't measured anything, but I would venture to say that it is about 5 times faster than with a regular drive.

Haven't had any reliability issues either. I must say that I dismantled the defrag application and other Windows useless applications like indexing and so on.

I am seriously considering buying another which will be used solely for Edius project files and video files.

SSD's are like High Speed Internet vs 54Kps modems. Once you try it, you ask yourself "How did I go along without it before".

They're on the expensive side, but the performance is there.

I haven't had any performance or reliablity issues. Maybe I'm just lucky.....

I've read some place in the net that WD hard drives like the Black or the green editions are'nt good for RAID at all. they will break the array! so if you do go with RAID stay away from them.

I don't use black or green, I use 24/7 enterprise drives that are designed for 24/7 operation and cost far more than black or green, but I sleep well at night

i would love to get those anton, but im in no position to do that financially. the above system is costing me 1700.00. hopefully the wd blacks i have will last through a handful of jobs before they fail on me. well see.

I have an SSD for my notebook (which has a RAID) and it boots much faster. First generation had problems but they are much better now.

I had an SSD - lastest 3 months.
WD Blacks are OK, not as good as WD enterprise, don't use Greens.

I am not sure why they call them Greens, because they become landfill, so not really green
