  • How stable is Edius 6?

I use edius 5.51 and it is very stable. I don't think I have ever had it crash.

I would like to upgrade to Edius 6 when it is available.

I went to see a demo of Edius 6 (actually it was 6.01) last week. During the session Edius crashed several times.

I appreciate that someone will point out that this version is not out there yet, but for those who have used Edius 6, is this crashing unusual?

No-one is going to answer that question I'm afraid - they're all still under NDA until the software release. All I will say is you were looking at 6.01 and that's definitely still beta and not scheduled for release until Nov/Dec timeframe.

OK, perhaps I wont rush to upgrade until someone can answer this after version 6 is released.

The crashing might be down to other factors of course, but it did not inspire confidence.

There were some issues at IBC too - almost all of them attributed to the HDSPARK drivers (hence my reference to 6.0.1), which were pretty much alpha at the time.

That probably explains it, as the demo was using hardware as well (I don't know if it was the Spark card).

At the moment I just would like the software upgrade.

Many times crashing can be attributed to being hooked to hardware for shows that has not been extensively tested as Steve has pointed out. I know I had several crashes it NAB (IN April) the first day and after testing, found out we had a bad video card. It was fine after that. When you are used to the rock solid performance you normally get from Edius it is always a shock to have it crash.

Never judge stability and other issues of software based on beta or pre-release versions.

Actually the crashes I had on the open day were primarily the card reader I was trying to use to show off the source browser. Naturally it worked to copy some footage onto the PC before the open day started but when I plugged it in during the day it went horribly wrong.
It also turns out one of the hard drives I had the footage on was a bit dodgy (again worked perfectly until I have 30 people sitting in front on me!)
That is the bain of any demonstrators life - things work fine until you have just done the speech about how wonderfully stable the program is then bang!
Obviously version 6 is going to be the first version of the new program so it is bound to have bugs but with the playing I have done with the copy I got for the open day I have been very pleased.

In general, v x.0 initial release software is more stable than pre-release software, and should be crash-free (say, less than one per week) on any system that is a reasonable match to the systems used to develop and test the software. However, it gets a bit softer when you install the software on a system that is NOT a good match to the systems used in testing. That is why some vendors are rather picky about what they will support in terms of user-side PC configurations; e.g., only certain processors, video cards, etc.

Consider the wisdom about upgrades to MS Windows - do not upgrade until after SP1. The Edius 4.x to Edius 5.0 transition may be an indicator as to how good the 5.5-to-6.0 transition will be.
