I just purchased this camra and I am editing with EDIUS 4.61. I am not exactly sure how to convert the files so they will work in EDIUS. An since I am not burning to blueray or HD which exporter should I use. Thanks in advance.

If you can, upgrade Edius to 5.12. You'll be able to import native 550 files directly to the timeline, and output whatever you want. I can even edit on my old laptop; little sticky on the timeline while scrubbing, but still workable.

The Sony 550 files are AVCHD (I had one) - therefore, as I do with the Canon HF-S21 (same file structure) I have been using the GV (Canopus) free AVCHD2HQ converter to convert the files to HQ, which edits one heck of a lot better with EDIUS (especially the older versions) than any native AVCHD file. You're not going to get much more than 1 A/V timeline to run well with AVCHD (supposing you have an older machine) - if that! You'll find the AVCHD2HQ converter on the GV website.
      Good luck.

John always use the Motion Browser software to transfer files to the PC. THis will transfer clips not the FAT32 files that are on the camcorder. IF you shot a show of 90mins then it will be transfered as one clip. In the camcorder it could be 5 FAT32 files depending on data rate.

I would convert to HQ unless you have a fast PC.

When editing my NX5U, SR11 and XR500 on my PC I convert them all for multicam. For single track it will run native with Edius 5.5. I don't mean from the camera files I mean from the file the Motion Browser transfered to the PC. The XR500 is used for family video and the Motion Browser software keeps a nice archive of the files and makes look-up very easy. Allowing you to search by all sorts of means like a database program, even by face!!!

As an aside the Sony Motion Browser software is quick to recognize the NX5U and will also transfer from the NX5U as well as the consumer cameras. The utility that came with the NX5U does not see the consumer cameras!!!!
