  • Edius 6, the best NLE ever!!!

I for one can't wait to buy the E6 upgrade. As far as editing goes E5 was fantastic, and E6 is just going to totally destroy the competition. At last we have a complete set of pro features needed to keep Edius top of the NLE pile, without wishing for some of the better functions of the competition. As far as how major this upgrade is, i can't remember an update to FCP, Avid, or Premiere that increased the usefullness to their platforms as what E6 is going to do for us. Some people will not be happy about DVD, Blu-ray, titles, ect. But lets not forget that Edius is an editor. You can't please all the people all the time, and it seems that GV know this, hence the hard work on the editing feature set. As an editing platform, I can't believe the amount of new and improved editing features in 6. Lets hope GV never stray away from the path being layed by E6. "The King Is Dead, Long Live The King"

    Dave.

I have to completely agree... I was a NLE Nomad a few years back, having tried everything out there, and wasn't happy with anything untill I tried Edius. We pitched our tent when Edius 4 came out. After Edius 4 got straightened we were hooked. (This was after already investing in Avid MC software, which isn't as good as Edius). Can't wait to use the new feature set of Edius 6!

Apart from the some features missing for updates, EDIUS 6 is in a good way of development suitable for any editor; GV is good to know that listening to the needs of its users... and that translates into more new tools that complement and NLE software uun pretty solid as a rock and evolutionary leader.

          Hi David

Whilst I agree with your sentiments re Edius 6 and also have to say that we would not use another Editor for many reasons some of which you have mentioned here I think in all honesty I would have to say "Edius 6, the best NLE ever!!! (Almost)".

For us we do not always have the luxury of grading exclusively outside of Edius so with the initial implementation of 10bit HQX a simple white balance to the 10bit footage would be processed in 8bit as none of the filters have been upgraded to 10bit processing, not ideal by any means. (unless I am understanding this wrongly). I am also not sure how full the Alpha support actually is and what impact this will have on 3rd party plugin integration etc.

That said I am excited by these advances in Edius 6 and am really looking forward to its arrival, I hope it will be an Editor we can be very proud off as it really starts to mature.....I also look forward to removing the "(Almost)" in the not to distant future.

          Best

I've used many other editors, and completely agree with the sentiments expressed in this post. But I sure wish GV would get on the stick with the Video publications which compare various editing software packages. These publications have a large influence on a considerable readership, and for the most part the more often than not omission of EDIUS in these articles is hindering the general knowledge about a great product. And I too am eager for the further improvements in V.6.

              Hi Dave.

Totally get your point. The whole 10bit recording does seem a little mute if the filters do not support 10bit and as you say only 8bit. I have heard that there are more filters in 10bit than what may have already been suggested, but unfortunately colour correction does not seem to be one of them on release. That said, the whole point from GV is to constantly update E6 to full 10bit support where applicable. Seeing as Edius as a platform is rock solid, I would rather have the various 10bits on offer now, with the remaining 10bits later, this is not some lame role out but rather a positive move from GV for the users. The other improvements also sound like great fun.

              Cheers.

              Dave.

                Hi Alan.

Aint that the truth. I find it really frustrating knowing how great Edius is and knowing how much it could help others who use other NLE's and new users. Maybe it does not help a piece of software when it changes ownership (Canopus to GV) to be consistent. But now GV have had it for some time now, it is also their major editor, and the leap to V6, this may help it becoming more noticed. I have taken a couple of our systems to a facilities house to complete the grade of our latest feature, this place is all Avid and Da Vinci. After a while the editors and technicians overcome their curiosity and started asking questions, to say their where surprised would be on the lighter side of understatement. They seemed to understand its power and flexibility, and knocked out by the VTR function when we machine controlled the Edius to an Avid for digitising our media to their server. Lets hope the marketing of E6 is made a little easier with it's new features.

                Cheers.

                Dave.

                  Videomaker

I just received a e copy of Videomakers article "Editing Software Buyer's Guide". NLE's. Not one mention on Edius in the article. I guess that's why I don't subscribe to their magazine anymore. You just can't trust the content as being the whole truth.

                    Dave.
I hear you loud and clear on this as it is something frustrates us constantly with some of our client base, sadly it seems some folk are so brainwashed regards their current editor, even the pain of the current or last edit seems to not be enough to nudge them in the direction of Edius....which would make life a whole lot less complicated for them.

Another thing that frustrates us is our media colleges being so entrenched in FCP with a fixed notion that anything less is a disservice to their students....the whole brainwashing process often compounded by tutor bias leading young financially challenged filmmakers to shell out a small fortune to get less.

Still there are always those who are prepared to listen and investigate and try stuff out and it is so nice to see the realisation of Edius's potential dawning upon them as they start to well simply get stuff done.

                    Regards

                    Dave.

                      Hi Dave.

It's a real pain trying to explain to an editor that uses another NLE that they should at least give Edius a try. Maybe it's down to being busy, as it is hard to get time away from what you are doing, personaly when I am not editing I am sleeping or something else to get my head space back. I suppose if a FCP, Avid, or Prem user tried to switch me onto using any of them platforms, I would not have too much spare time to have a go. That said, at least I have used and do use them programs when not in my studio, so it is fair to say I probably have a balanced opinion and working knowledge of those NLE's. It seems users of other NLE's do not give Edius the time of day, and do make comments even when they have never seen it. A lot of this could also be down to perceived market share. Lets hope E6 helps us to dig a little deeper into the industry.

                      Cheers.

                      Dave.

Not one mention on Edius in the article.
However, Videomaker is largely oriented to the Neo level target, its reviews and articles are rather shallow and often contain errors of omissions and commission. And they have to be sensitive to their advertisers' concerns

A key to being mentioned in articles is to get to the reviewers/authors, not just the editors. And of course the advertisers such as Videoguys, B&H, etc. and to have a good presence on the web in the various forums where video editors lurk.

Most folks to not change NLE lightly, the pain of learning it too great if time is of any value.

Hi Guy - my point exactly. And Don, perhaps your reasoning is well taken - that Videomaker is for the junior set of film-makers - but all the more important that EDIUS be more visible to them, since most of them will grow up to be BIG film-makers, and thus possibly ardent advanced EDIUS enthusiasts. Most publications, even at this level, strongly mention Vegas and Premiere, and those guys are no certainly amongst EDIUS's main competitors. Dave is right - it's frustrating trying to spread the word to competent film-maker cohorts when they just give you a blank stare when you try and extoll the meriad of positive attributes of the EDIUS NLE.
                          Cheers again,
