Yep, Edius is stuck at 8bit. The more expensive Edius HD is still 8bit.

Ya know Pat,
I said something to that effect in a post the other day and it was pretty much ignored as was a question about the sometimes mentioned possiblity
of a 10bit compressed codec for Edius.
As far as HD-SDI, I would like to see it but I would like to see Edius be able to pick and choose the different flavors
of video and codecs, or none, (as opposed to just being able to go to Canopus HQ capture or DV) and be able to use them effectively. Not necessarily in rt, but just useable.
So, I have ordered an Intensity Pro and components to build a seperate system that, at least, I can get a conversion from HD-SDI to HDMI
pretty easy. I can finally capture at 1920x1080. I'll be curious to see how the BM compressed 10bit codec plays in Edius. I know the uncompressed yuv will play in it. It might even take less resources due to the fact that Edius is not having to convert from 1440 to 1920 on the fly. We shall see.

Likewise - if there is any inkling whatsoever to affordable hardware changes/upgrades, etc. straight from Grass Valley.

Though it is a converter and not a native ingest solution, the ADVC-HDM1 (bi-directional HD-SDI to HDV IEEE1394) has recently dropped in price significantly--down almost $3,000 in the US from it's initial release list price.

Japan already has a HDMI card. So hopefully it will be released outside of Japan. Then you could use a HD-SDI to HDMI converter and are set.

I don't think you'll be seeing HDRECS (the HDMI card) outside of Japan any time soon, if ever.

The DirectShow device support in EDIUS v4.5 opens some doors in this respect, but I don't know that this would offer a direct input pathway for the likes of AJA or BMD boards.

You can certainly ingest from another system/program and use those files on EDIUS timelines - I've successfully used files captured with an Intensity Pro board in v4.5, captured from a Mac no less (as AVI).

DirectShow device support is an interesting feature, i think...

but do you know some "serious" card to use with it?

I was told today that the Blackmagic cards may not peacefully exist on the same system as with an Edius card... However, the Aja should. Perhaps that may pave the way for an Aja Xena in the middle of all of this.

Would love to know what other solutions have been tested, tried, thought of, or are just plain working or failing. This would include details as to how the files are captured, and if they play well when placed straight on an Edius timeline or if they all need to go through a transcoding run (say to HQ), etc.

I've got an SP system - been very nice/flexible for the most part.

I wanted to see if there was any way to finaggle HD component or HDSDI in, via external hardware (say an AJA or Blackmagic card). Ideal scenario would be for Edius to recognize it and capture to Canopus HQ. Less ideal would be to cap via another program and then batch transcode via Procoder (if necessary). I have a dual xeon 3.6.

I'm using a couple of AJA boxes in my current system to convert HD component to HDSDI and even downconvert it as well - so outputs are covered.

It would be handy to get it to accept in going in though...
