  • Batch Capture: tape name??

HI to all, I'm an Avid editor and I'm starting to use Edius because I think it is on the right way to become a valid alternative...

So I'm studing this software and I really like it but it has some issue in my opinion...

First of all Waveform/Vectroscope Monitor shows timecode/audiometer overlay... it is a bug I think...

Second: as Avid editor I use a lot the batch capture function and I think Edius batch has a problem: Edius doesn't ask for a tape name when you capture a clip.
How can I batch capture from different tapes if Edius doesn't know what is the tape of each clip?

    is it right?

PS I'm italian, scuse me if my english is not perfect...

Must me something with your system, no overlay of audio meter or timecode on waveform/vector scope and it does ask for the tape name when you are using batch capture.

The inclusion of overlay within readings of the Waveform and Vectorscope is an intended design - we provide the ability to print-to-tape/file with the overlay data stamped onto the output. This in turn means that the overlay imaging needs to be (conceivably) factored into any legal colourspace checks.

If you want clean analysis of video, simply disable the overlay (shortcut = CTRL+G). You'll still get your timecode data appearing below the video preview. Once you're done checking video, just switch the overlay back on if you would like.

I know that I can disabile overlay... but why??? Waveform monitor should never show overlay... is useless...
I like the possibility to print overlay to tape or file; it is very useful. But not on waveform/vectroscope monitor.

        About tape names:
When i capture a clip it doesn't ask to me the tape name.
So if I have to recapture it later how can I recognize the right one?

        Tell me if i'm wrong...

You must be capturing on the fly, it just ask you to name the clip, but if you are doing batch capture, there are reel name that you need to type into the batch capture window and then when you go to capture, it ask you to put in the right reel and then you can click ok before it will capture.

yes, scuse me for my english... this is exactly what i'm trying to say...
Edius should ask tape name always... even if you capture on the fly...

Feature request? don't you think so?

Maybe as an option, cuz when people want to captured on the fly, it means they want to quick capture, I don't want to mess around with naming the tape and such, you can do that with batch capture.

As Kenneally explained, if you output with the timecode on you might want to know how it shows on the Waveform/Vectorscope. It is no big deal to diable it as long as you know it is there.

Also if you are capturing via Edius you can go into SETTINGS > APPLICATION SETTINGS > DECK SETTINGS and then check the Confirm Filename box to show up before or after the capture.

I must admit, being able to add a reel name during a quick capture would be great. sometimes i just need to drop a few shots into the timeline from different tapes and batch capturing isnt the best way to do it, but i still need to name my reels. Ok i can go to clip properties after and do it, but if i forget, it makes restoring clips at a later date, a big problem. What would be nice is a Combi Dropdown on the same windows as the clipname prompt, that has the last reelname selected already, and the dropdown populated with reels already in the project and as it is a Combi, easy to add a new reel name. That should keep everybody happy. What is the chance of that????

                    Reel No/ Tape Name

I find that working with HDV tapes, it is not as easy to set up a batch capture list. I have always prefered just sticking in a tape and capturing the whole tape, using the option to divide file at the time code breaks. After capture, I delete the clips I won't use. No muss no fuss, and saves a lot of wear and tear on the deck and tapes.

The problem is that Edius does not ask for a Reel No when using this capture method so when clips go off line it becomes a challenge.

Could we please have the capture tool ask for reel No in the next release? All the other editing programs have this, why not Edius?

There are many things I love about Edius, and almost nothing I like about Avid, but when it comes to keeping track of tapes there is no contest: sorry to say Avid wins. I know that Edius will NEVER be taken seriously by a major international broadcaster I work for, until this issue is resolved. And if you want to do a batch re-capture you have to KEEP confirming to Edius that the right tape is inserted. This is insane! If the Edius software team don't understand what I am talking about, get them to spend 10 minutes with Avid's Media Manager and all will be clear. I tried to raise this a while back but my post was deleted. I can't even believe that this is difficult to engineer.
Sorry to go on about it, but if you are working on an observational documentary with maybe 60 or 70 tapes per episode, then the ability to keep track of all your tapes as they are bulk ingested, and to recapture selected items semi-automatically is ESSENTIAL.

Edius asking for reel on batch capture

For me is also very important that Edius could ask for a new tape everytime you start a batch capture. I hope next update include this possibility.

                          hi to all ,

i tryed batch capture in my last project last year , i make a patch capture for 100 tapes .

i just put a name for the tape , every tape must has a name , after that when you cature , edius will ask you insert tape #tape name# then you press ok then it start capturing . without name for tape it will not ask you about the tape beacuse edius dont know any tape you want ? :)

                          thanks alot
