I guess I'm waiting till it sorts out a bit more in the fall. perhaps it's a state of too many choices :-)

Intel have a page where all cpu names/numbers are sorted out,

Maybe you should wait a month buying a new laptop, becouse
intel has just made the new chipset G33 or P33, and the new
core2duo line with a 1333 ghz bus, the best part is the price,
    a E6850 core2duo at 3ghz and 4mb cashe, bus speed1333 for
less than half the price of the core2duo extreme 2.9ghz.

There is also a new laptop cpu called centrino pro, I don´t know
the price for that one, I guess its also cheaper and faster.

As a long time AMD fan... right now, Intel is the one to go with...

I see lots of intel duo core chips for laptops and desktops with different chip numbers...can anyone sort out what's best to choose for a new system?

I second Intel Core 2 Duo mobile series. They are just triumphing over AMD right now, most of the budget laptops have AMD processors because they're trying to get rid of them.
