    yes

I can open the mov file in QT player and as soon as I close the player, Windows Explorer lets me delete the file

note: mov files seem to be loaded into Edius memory

    1. start a new Edius project
    2. look at Edius memory usage in task manager
    3. load the mov file into bin
    4. Edius memory usage is now double or more

I have seen that in many Edius versions but had no idea what caused it, you only realised something was up when encoding you were going to end up with a big file

    anton: well thanks a lot.
hope you connect better to GV support than I do...
If this works out, may I give you the list of other bugs I found as well? ;->

'course I can host the file here a few days. It's our server. If that's all it takes to get a working solution I'd be more than happy to host any sample file support needs.

While at it, may I suggest to add better error messages?
In this case as well as when importing unsupported files it would also be really helpful to know what exactly made Edius unable to delete/import a certain file. It's all a trial and error scenario as there's no list that I know of that states which formats are supported.
(we are cutting with preview clips, fetching full quality only very late in the lifetime of a project. getting e.g. m2t files down to a sensible size/resolution while keeping the .mts extension is a royal PITA, as the .m2t parser only supports pretty weird resolutions... I'll elaborate on that elsewhere, if anybody (including devs) is interested)

I can confirm this is exactly my deduction from my own testing. I can only reproduce it with Quicktime files.

I have reported that immediately, can you leave your mov file there for a few days

even Windows Explorer fails to delete the file when it is already removed from bin because Edius clings on to it and sucks up memory like crazy bu simply placing the file in the bin

I can confirm that your mov file can't be deleted once added to bin

    very strange

jshaw: might be related. this seems like a general file locking bug, i.e. files are locked even if they are not in use anymore.

    GrassValley_BH: no, no and no

antonsvideo: no, that's not the case here. I start a new project, import one clip into the bin and try to delete it. no timeline usage at all.

PS: Think I found it out right now: It is file-type dependent! I can delete some .m2t files and .avis and .wavs as well, however this mov here cannot be deleted! Seems like another bug in the Quicktime importer (I have one reported bug standing since 4 months now with no solution from Canopus yet... also really frustrating)

    Link to the mov:

Could you please try to reproduce and/or tell me if there's anything I can do about it except telling support that this is a bug and probably also not getting a solution for it?

(this is fourcc "dvhq" - 720p50 DVCPROHD; play it with EDIUS directly, or with VLC/any other player based on ffmpeg/libavcodec; or use Calibrated{Q}'s or dvfilm's codec; or possibly use a mac with FCP, I don't know if it will play it..)
(these files work like a charm and have been used for lots of projects; only deleting them does not seem to work! I guess the Quicktime API still has an open reference to the mov that's not freed when trying to delete the file...)

OK, I investigated a little further. Although I had initially thought that this would not help too much as there would be open handles for all files as long as one is not trying to delete a file, I gave handle.exe a shot.

Its output is rather interesting: Edius does not have open handles for a file i CAN delete, and TWO open handles for the file I CANNOT delete. Seems obvious to me..

    (screenie attached)

If anyone is able to reproduce this I guess I have already proved it's a bug and done all the analyzation one can expect from a customer. I just don't know how to get a solution for it if I don't have access to the sources...

Shouldn't be. Has happened with P2 media that would have come in through P2 select - but happens after I have been working for days and opened and closed the programme many times - so P2 select shouldn't be using the clips anymore.

Are they in use by EDIUS Watch, P2 Select or XD Select?

I don't know if it's connected - but I also have problems with trying to overwrite files which can really slow up my workflow. So for example if I export the timeline - then make a change and decide I want to overwrite that file, I will get a message saying that the file is open in Edius and can't be overwritten. However, if I remove the file from the Bin/Timeline etc - I still get the message.

So I will then also try and delete the file through the Bin - but it won't do it. And if I open explorer I can't delete the file from there either because it says it's open in Edius.

So I have to either rename the file and/or delete the file in explorer when Edius is closed.

  • EDIUS: Delete file in the bin from filesystem does not work

    Hi!

This is one of the bugs that are most inconvenient to us:

When finalizing a project to archive clip references to our footage database it is crucial to delete unused files from the filesystem.
I found teh bin's "Search" - "Timeline reference" - "Not used" to be exactly what we need.
The only problem is this: Right clicking and selecting "Delete file" simply results in an error message that the file cannot be deleted.
(Must be something like "Error while deleting files" - we have a german version here...)
Edius 5.51, WXP up2date with all SPs
    the same thing happens on
Edius 5.12, WXP up2date with all SPs
    on a completely different box.

I consider this to be a bug, and the error message is pretty useless.
I checked access rights, no problems. I can delete the files manually from the FS, no problem.
It does not matter which file(type)s I use, it is always the same story.
Using filemon by sysinternals does not really reveal that much, but I can see a "sharing violation"
    see the screenie attached

    Any tip is much appreciated.

    tia!
