  • How do you clean up audio background noise

One of the reasons weddings are so tough to shoot...Murphy's Law always comes into play.
My clients got married in a banquet hall overlooking a golf course. Unfortunately the maintenance guy decided to mow the lawn below just as the ceremony started.
I've tried cleaning up sound before with limited success. The voice audio is so good in this shoot I hate to mess with it too much. I mike'd the groom with a lavaliere but even so you can hear the lawn mower in the background. Is there a function in Edius that allows you to just target an eliminate a specific sound?

you can apply the graphic equalizer and then loop a section in between words where you only hear the lawn mover, while it is looping, pull down a slider and up again, then the next one and up again until you find the one that reduced the noise the most

    or try this

Sound Forge Noise Reduction filter will remove fixed noise patterns but use sparingly as it does alter the audio. I use to remove fan noise etc in the theatre.

Similar noise reduction tools exist in other audio edigng programs such as Audition. If the noise pattern is consistend and you can find a good sample, e.g., between words, you can usualy make a significant reduction in the noise. But it does take a bit of experimentation to find the best sounding amount of noise reduction. Too much noise reduction can result in unwanted artifacts.

If it's a constant hum/whine, High-pass or Low-pass filter can sometimes help. But if you have other audio tools at your disposal, you'll likely get better results from doing it outside.
