Hi! It's time for me to move from 720/60p to 1920/30p. Trying to play files from
Canon 5D or Sony EX3 and Edius can't plays files with out to re encode to Avi's. I have no time to re encode 10-15 hours of footage. My question is- do anybody can successfully working with mp4's 1920/30p files in Edius if yes what computer configuration using for that or time to switch to Final Cut Pro? Thanks

The MP4 from EX3 is not true MP4 (h.264) it is MPEG-2 Log GOP. This format will play on a medium spec PC without any transcoding

The MOV canon files are true MP4 h.264 and need a fast i7 processor for realtime editing

If the sony files wont play - try installing the sony EX browser software.

Can you be more specific about computer: mobo, possessor, video card, ram,
do you really do edit canon mov or any hd mov on edius without re encode

Project setting 1920x1080 29.97p. Not the best test in the world, but I can play 3 tracks of Canon 5D footage realtime. The fourth slowly comes to a halt. It shows as Quicktime Video (avc1) 30fps

I have EX footage that shows as Mpeg2 1280x720 29.97 and it plays with no problem.

My system is in my signature. FCP will have a much tougher time playing this (if at all).

You can switch to FCP if you like but....FCP wont play any of this real time you will need to spend many hours converting to ProRes in FCP.

System specs....look in pjssss profile for best i7 config, we use DX58SO from Intel which is fine if you have GV hardware only but it does not play nice with Infinity from BM Design.

As Dave says, FCP will have a bad time. In my experience Edius is much better at real time performance than FCP; I have carried out numerous tests with the same footage, same transitions, same fx and rendering on the same MacPro and Edius outperforms in every department!
