  • Edius and XL1 footage from 2001

    Wierd, wierd, wierd!

Vintage footage from an XL1 recorded in 2001, Edius captures with freaky audio. When played back the audio (generally) stays in sync, but the pitch is low or varying with snapping sounds and occasional higher pitch.

Played back on my Sony DSR-30 the tape looks and sounds perfect during playback, and the freaky sound occurs when played from the computer. (edius, media player, whatever... the audio is a mess!)

Recapturing the footage w/PremPro2 through NX in ADVC mode works perfectly and even shows through the ext monitor!

    Any ideas?

    Somewhat annoyed,

Why would Edius do this? 8sec. samples

    Good Premiere Pro2

    Bad Edius

Same tape, same deck, same cable, same NX input, both sounded good during capture.

IIRC, the XL1's had an odd problem where the audio sampling rate was not exact. This caused drift over time. Worse yet, I think it got fixed later, which leads to a "sometimes it's wrong, sometimes it's right" problem.

Do you still have the original XL1?

BTW: Weird is weird and that's why it's spelled weird... It's one of those weird exceptions to the i before e except after c unless it sounds like a as in neighbor and weigh rule. :)

XL1 is long gone, and I think the footage is from an early XL1. I bought the Sony DSR-30 to handle XL1 footage. It worked flawlessly with Storm/Rex hardware & software. The only one misbehaving here is Edius Capture.

It's okay - my wife isn't a great speller either...

So back on track... Hmm. Rex/Storm days there was an option to resample the incoming audio to fix the "Canon problem" - I'm not sure how/if EDIUS detects this or not. The Canopus.INI option was CanonAudio1=1 (or 2 or 3), I believe.

If it's any consolation... whilə PrəmPro2 capturə workəd bəttər than Edius, thə audio did drift about 5 framəs over a 45 min. clip.
