I have done a direct comparison with DVCAM tape and the DN100 and the files from the DN100 are definately sharper in the same way when recording to DVCAM from the timeline and play back on a decent monitor the image is softer. I was surprised.

I appreciate that the specs for the DN100 say you can control it from firewire and Edius does recognise it but when playing, it just stops after a few seconds at any point you try to play. The same file plays into an Apple no problem, I just set to non controlled device.

This is only a minor niggle and I'm generally very happy with the Edius especially it's ability to output directly to Digibeta/SP for broadcast for half the price of other systems.

how does it record better quality dv? If it is a dv stream it can not be better. It would be just the same as tape but on harddisk. Enlighten me?

I just check the manual of the Dn 100 that seems to be their only model.
You don't have to turn off firewire control. The unit emulates vtr mode even under ohci

    from the manual:
Control from a Mac or PC
You can also manage the DV Bank directly from a Macintosh or a PC just
like your FireWire (IEEE-1394) DV camcorder. Virtually all PC or Macintosh
software that supports the industry standard AV/C command set can
control the DV Bank adding a full-range of capabilities for capture and edit
    functions.

Next point the dn 100 does make files at start and stop of the camcorder so there are many files not one.
    It is still file based.

The Datavideo DV harddrive does not have files as such it is like a giant 9 hour tape and only plays and records, you cannot transfer the files like XDCAM or a traditional hard drive.

The advantage of the Datavideo DV harddrive is that it records in better quality than a tape and of course it's recording time when linked with a cascade to another one I can record for 18 hours, ideal for conferences.

Why was Edius designed without the ability to switch off the firewire control? every other edit program I've used, has this ability.

    Switching off Firewire control

Is it possible to switch off Firewire control, I've been told it is not. I need to take in data from a Datavision DV harddrive which is not possible without switching it off.
Working...
