I have a project coming up where I need to edit 1920x1080 25p dslr footage with 1440x1080 25p footage from a hdv cam.

I want to transcode everything to canopus HQ but it's not clear to me what project setting I need to use?

Just to get an idea about the workflow I use (I just started using edius pro 5.5)

First I import all the footage into edius and then select it and convert it into canopus hq online files. I don't see any options there so I guess Canopus know what to use to transcode its hq avi file to?

For the hdv files it creates a 1440x1080 avi file and the dslr footage is converted to 1920x1080

    What then? Should I create a 1440x1080 25p or a 1920x1080 25p projectfile?

Use whatever format you want to finish in- so probably, unless you want to go back to hdv, 1920x1080 25p is the way to go.
edius will handle the 'mixed formats' without you even noticing, on the whole.
    Work: Edius 7.20.437 on HP Z220 workstation; Edius 6.08 on i7 running Win 7 64 bit 6 GB RAM. Neo 2.0 on a Lenovo T61. JVC GY-HD201 and GY-HD110.
Home: Canon HV20 and Panasonic GH1 (hacked); Neo 3.01 on HP elitebook 8440p i7 and Neo 1 on homemade dualcore desktop.

there should not be a need to convert

don't they play for you without converting?

project setting for Pal p should be 1440x1080 25p over 50i or 1920x1080 25p over 50i, the choice is yours, quality will be the same to the human eye

1440x1080 25p over 50i will give you more realtime performance over 1920x1080 25p over 50i

The dslr footage does play natively but the sound stutters meaning my q6600 machine barely can handle it, I also have to do some colorcorrection to make both camera's match so I thought it would be better to convert?

Then I might transcode the dslr footage only and make a 1920x1080 25p over 50i project and trow the hdv and canopus hq footage in one timeline, see how that works out. Think that's also easier if you export frames as they will have the right aspect ratio.

If your current machine barely copes with DSLR footage, why not choose 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080 as the project setting? I don't think we can see the difference between the two. You haven't told us what you want to do with the final footage.

Normally I would render out a 1440x1080 25p 25mbs mpeg2 file (since my main source files are allways hdv but since a short time now a dslr has been added to that workflow) and use that further in tmpgenc to go to dvd or blu-ray. I have a winfast 1100 card that I can utilize together with tmpgenc for faster output, especially Blu-ray which is about in realtime.

What is stopping you from using 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080 then?

Also for the dslr footage? That is 1920x1080, my hdv footage does edit fine in a 1920x1080 project though.

Until you upgrade your computer, you can continue to use 1440 x 1080. You won't be able to see the difference between 1440 x 1080 and 1920 x 1080 on the video screen.

Edius will handle that for you. Just select the project as 1440 x 1080 25p and you can load your DSLR footage in as well - no problems.
