I've had problems with the Taiyo Yuden (now JVC) Value Line, but great success with their 8X DVDs, and if in the US, Supermediastore will ship free.

TMPGenc products only asked to be connected to the Internet for it to renew its license. Once the license is renewed - you can disconnect it and use it until it asked again. AFAIK, the license is definitely valid for more than 2 -3 days duration. If you have a hardware firewall installed, and you only connect your editing PC just for TMPGenc purpose and then disconnect it immediately afterward, I see NO possibility for any virus to make its way into your PC.

Please see the other post on TMPGenc (under Fastest and Best way to downscale HD to SD). Peterjames has written to TMPGenc - and they said the software will only require re-validation (connecting the host machine to Internet) once a month.

Thanks Anton: When we were using DVDWS2 we could use 16x disks and set the burning speed to 4x. I have a bunch of 16x Verbatim Disks that can be bought locally so I will have to order some of the disks you mentioned on line.

also, when using premium Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R disks, you don't need to verify, you can rest assured that it will be perfect

if you use any 16x disk, the slowest burn speed Edius allows you to set is 8x

Thanks Anton... I have not bought another program since Ulead DVD Work Station. Since 5.0 came out and all I needed was a simple DVD that played from start to finish without a menu I started using Edius to do a disk burn and then save the encoded file so that I could come back later and make another copy. It has been quick and simple... After reading your posts on TMP4 I was ready to buy that program but when I found out that it had to be connected to the internet to work I backed off. My editing machines are not connected to the Internet because of my scare with a virus that destroyed one of my editing stations. We had to format the system drive and reinstall every thing. At the moment I just do not have the time for any down time.We are ( I should say I) am so pushed to get out my program every week that I really don't have time to learn a new program. I do have a producer that handles the TV station air time and commercial spots. However, the rest is up to me... shoot ... edit (3 cameras) ... produce the tapes for 4 TV stations and then the DVD s and BD-Rs with a one week lead time. Right now I am putting out the tapes for the TV stations that must be FEDXed tomorrow morning. They come off one at a time and the program is 58:30. So you see it will be another 4 hours just for the tapes tonight.

This is my first adventure with TV production and for sure I could not have pulled it off without your help and the other folks on the forum. We have had a bunch of hoops to jump through (including closed captioning) and a bunch of gremlins to beat back. It seems now that we have most of them licked and our production is becoming smoother.

So thanks to you and the rest of you. You will never know how much help you are to some of us when you ask a question about a particular feature of Edius and Anton answers it.

Yes Anton..I Always tick verify box. I really don't know what it means either. The disk plays OK however. Since it is supposed to go to one of my TV stations that cannot play a DV or DVCAM SD tape (if you can believe that) I will try again. One thing I am not comfortable with in the Burn to disk option is the fact that I have trouble lowering the burn rate below 8X. A long time ago when we first started burning DVDs I was having trouble with some of the disks and someone told me (maybe you) to slow down the burn speed to about 4x and I have not had a problem since. Our duplicators are all set at 4x and so far no coasters or clients complaining about DVDs failing to play in their DVD player regardless of the brand. I still think that witchcraft is involved in burning DVDs and BD-Rs. Since we shoot in HD and then down convert to SD 4x3 we always burn a BD-R for our archive. So far we have not had clients ask for BD-R disks.

I have been burning from the time line a simple DVD of my projects without a menu for one of the TV stations that airs my program. On the last burn to disk I got this error message "failed to verify". I played the DVD and it played completely with out any dropouts or errors. What does this mean? Should I discard the disk?
