  • Trying to learn Edius.

I have not downloaded the trial version yet. I am watching a 2 1/2 hour tutorial on Edius but it is raising alot of questions for me that are not address in the tutorial I am hoping he is just skipping over them rather than Edius just not being able to do them. Simple things like it telling me to add a trans by dragging and drop between clips but what if I have say 50 5sec clips and I want to apply a dissolve and audio trans to all in one shot? Can this be done? Can I change to default transition (if there is a default)?

I notice the if i want to adjust the over all audio level of a clip I have to raise each end of the rubberband is the a way to grab the line and raise or lower it equally?

Is there a way to unlink all clips not just one at a time?
Can Edius capture from mini DV with sence detection?
I am suprised that you can't apply a video and audio disslove trans to the end of a clip it has to be done manually.
If I white balance a clip is there a way of coping that effect from the information pallettes and pasting it to another clip?
Sorry for all the question because I have alot more I am just suprised this tutorial does not metion these things. I need to make a decision on a new editing software from liquid 7 pretty soon.
    Thanks Mike

A 2.5 hour tutorial has to skip over most of the prgram features and would likely be limited to the 10% that does 80% of the work.

Consider downloading the EDIUS User Manual - it address most if not all of your questions with screen shots, and try the 30 day DEMO too. I am browsing my way thorugh the manual to get a better feel for what finer features and options are hidden in the knooks and crannies of the program beyond the default behaviors. An interesting read.

Combining that with the 30 day trial download should give a good feel for it. Europe has some cross-grade deals going for another couple weeks as well.

Thanks guys. I did not want to download yet without having some idea of how to proceed. Why waste part of my 30 days on how do I do this and that.
        Thanks Mike

If you want to raise or lower the entire clip, you can right click, scale All and set the percentage that you want to raise the audio up or down.

Also, unlink all clips at the same time by selecting all, right click>unlink

Don't forget Shift+Drag of the audio rubber band.

If we were closer to August and the WEVA convention there in Orlando I would tell you to come to the conference and I would give you some one on one training during some down time. I have submitted a proposal to speak for WEVA called Edius for the wedding videographer and concentrate on those techniques that are key to what we do all the time. Not sure if it will be accepted for a presentation or not but I am hoping. I know Mike Downey usually does a basic presentation as well so who knows. If nothing else you can always come to WEVA and learn all kinds of cool stuff and then go to the tradeshow where I'm sure Grass Valley will have a big booth setup where you can learn all kinds of cool things about Edius.

Of course there is no 30 day limit on the manual.

The quick answer is Yes to all of your questipons except capture with Scene detection

If by scene detection from miniDV tape you mean dividing captured video into separate clips, per the manual it can be configured to: "... cause captured data to be automatically divided into multiple AVI files during capture operations. Choices are:
                          • At timecode break
                          • When aspect ratio changes
                          • When audio sampling rate changes
                          • When the recording time data changes"

It looks to me like this has the effect of creating a new clip after every camcorder record pause, at least with respect to a IEEE1394 capture from MiniDV and HDV tape. This seems to be is based on the video metadata and format of the video stream, not jumps in image content. Not the same as automatic scene detection based on changes in the scene only, but potentially a help when doing capture from an original tape.

                            Michael,

I too have had to transition from my beloved Liquid Silver now that Avid are dropping it. I saw the writing on the wall many years ago and have been through all the alternatives including learning the dark side OSX and FCS.

Edius is by far my preferred editor now. There'll be a learning curve but believe me, non of the frustrations of many alternative apps.

The only one I have no experience of is CS5. Having bad times with previous versions I've left PPro behind but hear very good things about the latest incarnation.

More or less retired now. Still on the Essex(UK) coast. Edius 8.2wg all sorts of other, more or less redundant kit - production & Post.

After seeing Don's Don explained.post and rereading yours, maybe you did mean breaking up files on capture and yes it can do it as Don explained
