  • EDIUS, Procoder 3 - dual layer DVDs

Hi folks - I am at a watershed moment really. Still using and enjoying EDIUS 3.6, Procoder 3 and yes, ReelDVD for authoring - I know it's a bit 'Legacy' now.

My systems are still RexRT Pro and Storm 2.

The reason I say watershed is that I clearly want to move forward as regards EDIUS and either HDV or HD in the near future. None of my clients has asked for HD stuff yet - which sort of let's me off the hook a bit.

Regarding dual layer DVD - the time is here and now. I have been waiting for the dual layer and BlueRay format wars to subside too.

    So some questions:-

    1. Can PCE in EDIUS 3.6 export dual layer DVD VOB files?

    2. What is the DVD authoring package of choice ( I'm guessing ReelDVD has never heard of dual layer output?) - I hear DVDLab Pro is great but seems complex to me.

    3. What Dual Layer burners are people finding good?

    4. I use TY discs and will contiue to do so.

    5. Never authored a DL DVD yet but read some good tips on this forum.

    6. If I upgrade my systems to utilise the new EDIUS boards - what is the 'smart money' on as regards TurnKey solutions or self builds as I've always done? None of my current hardware (state of the art 2 years ago) will handle the new generation of EDIUS HDV and HD boards).

    7. Did we 'prove' that EDIUS 4.0 + will work with RexRT Pro - or is it a case of 'if it does, it does'?

Thanks - I need a good demo somewhere in the UK anyone know of Grass Valley exhibitions coming up?

    thanks Chris

Don't know about most of it, but you've just missed the Edius 4.5 demo shows at Manchester and London.

      Hi Chris,
      1. You can change the media size so you can dual-layer sized VOB filesystem output, but the burning application will still determine where to put the layer-change on its own.
      2. Nero, DVDLab, Encore, most of the currently-updated DVD authoring applications support dual-layer now.
      3. I'll let others comment.
      4. Good. Make sure they're authentic.
      5. Good.
      6. Well, there are some higher-end advantages to getting a GV turnkey, but if you're not talking to K2 servers or the like, it's really up to you. My general adage still applies: You pay in time, or you pay in money.
      7. It does, but it's not guaranteed/supported, so if you have trouble, you're on your own. Also keep in mind that Rex/Storm support will probably disappear soon (as in the next major version release of EDIUS, if not in a late v4.x release).
