I am trying to edit quicktime mov. 1920x1080 video files but am experiencing very slow playback and cannot work with these files unless i convert to avi first

    I am using edius 5.5 on asus p5qc mb, core 2duo 2.66 , 4g ram
wd caviar black hdrives. ati eah 5760 1g dd5 graphic card.

even playing in qt, the files are very choppy/jerky

what do i need to change to be able to work with hd files

That type of compression do these QuickTime files have?

Open it in QuickTime and hit Ctrl+I and post the info here.

Ok that's about 33MB/sec, which any recent drive can handle.

PhotoJPEG should scrub smoothly, but since this is going through the QuickTime module, I wouldn't trust it.

You can just right click on the file in the bin then Convert To > Canopus HQ (Online)

Now the new file should be smooth as butter and no noticeable quality loss. If you are worried about the quality, use Canopus Lossless...

ok dave i will try your suggestion and report back asap

however, i would like to know why these files play so slowly in qt, which is the native file format but very jerky indeed

is my comp up to working with hd files or do i need to upgrade anything so these files will play smoothly.

          best wishes

Well if it plays jerky in QT, then it's not really EDIUS' fault.

Something's up with the files. Photo JPEG is an old codec and it should play fine even on a single SATA drive...your bitrate is not too high. If you are trying to play these from a USB2.0 drive, then move them over to your internal drive.

Your best bet is just to convert it to Canopus HQ. You won't be able to tell a difference.

ok well i did as you said and it's fine and i really want to thank you for that, but i would still like to know why i can't get these files to play smoothly without any need to convert, as converting can take a lot of time if files are quite large.

i was hoping that the latest upgrade of my main editing comp would have solved the slow playback but it's not much faster than the old p4 3.2ghz with 2g ram and a radeon 9600 was.

do you think i should change anything with my com configuration or hardware???

i really appreciate your help and anyone else that can advise

While the Core2Dua is pretty sufficient to do more than the general computer work and some video stuff, full HD and compressed files are very processor intensive.

For myself I use in both my systems aging Xeon's, who still perform fine for HDV and HQ files, I tend to stay away from full HD to hold of any immediate investment.

This question only you, yourself can answer, it this performance issue worth the investment for i.e. a beefy i7 system, or do I convert to HQ and have a much slower workflow.

Could you try one of the same files on another computer with a similar CPU speed? Just to check if it plays fine or not under QuickTime.
