It is not all about the latest high spec's with regards to this problem.
It is more important to have the system's software be installed properly without any nonsense apps like "messenger" and the like.
Keep you system well maintained with minimum apps it will run well with Edius.

p.s. my systems are also medium/low spec and they do not exhibit those problems.
Keep 2 seperate systems, 1 for editing, another for the fun stuff.
If budget doesn't allows that make use of a swappable boot drive, I still use win2k, XP on other HDD's (very cost effective)

I had new installed OS to test the problem:
          1. install WIN7 64 bit
          2. install all necessary drivers
          3. install Edius 5.5
          4. Install VisTitle
          5. install Procoder
          6. Run Edius
          7. Problem comes out.

            Don't feel bad...
it happens to me all the time.
But I seldom use HQ as my source files.
I use .mov my T2i and native EX Cam, so I kind of expect it.

Can't wait until waveforms get some kind of update.
