  • V5.5 and RT with a 5D/7D.

I was excited with v5.5 release and RT AVCHD editing. I have a small GoProHD camera that shoots to mp4 and it just smokes through those files like nothing.

Initially I tried some 7D files after upgrading and they seemed to play pretty good to. It was much better than before the upgrade. My system is a Core2Quad Q6600. I know it is nothing compared to an i7 but it does pretty good for what I need now. It can handle the RT AVCHD editing pretty well. However these 7D files are being a pain. I know they are .mov files instead of m2ts files but they are AVCHD in a mov wrapper. The performance is improved but Edius sure crashes alot not. If I am playing with a few 7D files on the timeline and try scrubbing or starting playback on top of a 7D file after a few attempts Edius will just disappear "poof".

I know the QT files from the 7D weren't specifically targeted for RT playback with the AVCHD booster. I was just hoping it would be better with them. I hoped to get away with no conversion to HQ with V5.5 but it appears I will need to start doing it again with my 7D files. Luckily my 7D footage is a minor part of my workflow at this point.

Hopefully there is a way to get these DSLR files playing fluidly like they did the mp4 and m2ts files. Just wondering if maybe I have something set wrong. Even if I have my project set for 1080p or 720p to match the 7d files I still have problems. Most of my footage is HDV so I am dropping a few files from the 7D into a project and this is where problems crop out.

I'm hoping this is in the works with future versions and video DSLR footage is pretty popular now.

I've had the same thing happen with AVCHD files from the Panasonic GH1. Poof!

Yes I have a lot of crashes too with .mov, but convert to HQ AVI in the bin will work fine.

That's what I had been doing before. It does play better with the mov files but not quite there yet. I hear with HMC150 files it is pretty amazing. My little GoProHD has no issues whatsoever. I can play them RT with 2 or 3 filters on a Core 2 duo laptop. Still a worthwhile update. Maybe soon we will get mov.

I get good results when all the frame rates align. (as everyone might expect)

Instead of the standard Quicktime bloatware I'm using "Quicktime Alternative v1.81" with (so far) quite good results. Media Player Classic works when Media Player v12 or VLC fail.

7D and 5D Mark II do not shoot AVCHD. They shoot H.264 at high bitrates (max of 48mbps.)

AVCHD uses the H.264 codec, but it has to follow strict rules.

And it is those strict rules that v5.5 has been super optimized for!

5D & 7D files will vary in performance from system to system and the captured bit rate settings. CPU, QPI, Memory, Storage etc all come into play to make a system perform smoothly.

It's more important what is the spec for files from Canon's cameras- specially number of reference frames and GOP size. If someone can share small clip I can have a look at it.

I understand not a lot can be done but if you want to check out a small 7D clip send me a PM with your email and I will get one to you to play with.

You can easily remove the .mov wrapper with QuickTime 7 Pro. Just use MPEG4 as the exporter, and choose "Pass-through" for both audio and video and you will have a .mp4.

See if it makes a difference in speed.

Since you are so good with quicktime stuff, do you know anyway to repair a corrupted quicktime file so I can open it, I have try everything from quicktime to procoder to edius to photoshop to vlc and none can open this corrupted file from my SD card.

How big is the file? Maybe you can send it to me and I can take a look at it under OSX too. Also what error message are you getting when you open it in QuickTime?

OK....I'm pretty sure I have QT Pro but I can't find an h.264 version and an option for pass through. If it is possible can it be done in batch for lots of files?

The file is almost 4 gig, to big to send, Edius said can not import the file or something like that, Quicktime player said, error 2048, can not open file because it is not a file that Quicktimes understand.

Go to File > Export...under export, choose MPEG-4. File format should be "MP4", then you will see "Pass through" in the Video tab (under video format) and audio tab (audio format.)

This will pretty much take out the raw .mp4 from the .mov container. Even Windows 7 plays these files natively.

Not sure if you can repair that file, but here's a link that might come in handy:

Eventually everyone has a Quicktime file go bad that they REALLY need. Most of the time, the data is there, it's just improperly indexed or ...

Thanks for the link, most of those software are for mac, the last link is a repair place in Spain, I might have to do that one if I can find anything in the US.
                              Thanks again.
