The laptop is pretty powerful but nowhere near the desktop. I am able to easily edit in HD (to some extent). I never tried moving the dongle from one to the other but it is supposed to work. As far as I know it is "legal" to do so as well. I had two complete systems built for me and paid for two copies of the software so I have two dongles. Cheers.

After hours of editing.. NOTHING is obvious!
BTW... how is your performance on your laptop, and can you simply move the dongle back and forth between it and your workstation?

It's funny that after editing for hours sometimes what should be obvious isn't. That seems like a good idea you suggested. Copy the entire project and then trim it. If I can't figure out how to do it in Edius (first) I'll give it a try. However, I would think that Edius would allow you to accomplish this in the first place. Thanks.

I get it.
If you have temporary room on your portable (or your workstation... so long as it is a duplicate of your project), make a complete copy onto it..... THEN execute a consolidated backup?
It does seem than a non-destructive backup should be an option. I'm coming from the Premiere Universe and credit where it's due, Premiere did have a nice archive function.

I'm trying to accomplish two things.
1. Keep the original project untouched on my desktop.
2. Consolidate a second version of the same project that is trimmed to save space so I can transfer and edit it on my laptop.
I tried the "Backup & Cleanup" option on an old project to see what would happen and it actually deleted all of the original files on my desktop which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. I'm still trying to determine the correct procedure.

Dave.... if you don't need to consolidate and don't want to leave anything out, then just bypass the process altogether and simply copy your files to your archive.
Unless there is something in the Edius backup procedure that I'm missing, a straight file copy should do what you are looking for.

If I'm going to export a consolidated (smaller) project and I DON'T want to delete any files from the original project should I use "Backup & Cleanup?" I just want to make sure this procedure doesn't erase any files whatsoever from the project on my desktop.

Thanks for the reply. Right after my post I found "consolidate project" in help just as you also suggested.
Cheers

If you use consolidate project you will achieve the same thing. If you look in the help file the options for this function are explained.

How to trim project files for export?
I have a very large project on my desktop pc (over 500 gb) that I would like to transfer to my laptop. The completed production is about four minutes. When I used to edit in Premiere it was very simple to accomplish by clicking on Utilities > Project Trimmer. That would allow me to export the project itself along with ONLY the actual (cut-down) clips used in the finished production. I was also able to add handles (the length of which I could specify) so I would have the option to adjust the clips once on my laptop. This would save a tremendous amount of space because I would only transfer the files I need. Can this be done in Edius? Thanks.Tags: None
