  • Burn to a Blu-ray disc question

I have edited a quick project shot in 1080p 30p. I have my edius project settings at OHCI HD 60hz 1920x1080 29.97p. All is well there however when I want to burn directly to disk, in this case Blu-ray, the 'burn to disc' is grayed out. I was hoping to use Edius to create my blu-ray test. I just want to see if my new Blu-ray burner is working properly. What am I doing wrong or need to change?
    Thanks
    Jim

The "Burn To Disk" option will be grayed out if the project settings are not compliant with the DVD or Blu-Ray specs. There is no 1920x1080/29.97p in the Blu-Ray spec, so the project can't be burned as-is. You'll need to change the project settings to interlaced, or render a compliant file first by enabling the "Enable conversion" checkbox and making the proper adjustments in the output settings.

      That did it! Thank you.

I also have a few question about burning to Blu-ray and need to understand the process.
I will be setting up a new I7 edit system this weekend or sometime next week. I already have Edius V5 for the new system and I bought the Pioneer BDR-205 burner. I do not have Encore or DVD Architect. I do have Procoder 3 and it's updates.
What am I'm going to need to burn video to BD-disks? Did someone say Movie Factory come with Edius?
Is there a bit-Rate Cal available (needed), like for the old DVDs?

Can I encode a SD video (from the Edius time line or PC-3) at a higher bit rate and burn it to a BD-disk as a high-def type video?

With regular DVDs, I would have Edius / pro coder encode the video to VOB files and then I would just burn the Video_ts directory to the DVD.
Does Blu-Ray do the same? Will Edius5 / Procoder 3 do the same for me?
What about Dolby Digital? Right now PC-3 encodes AC3 into the VOB files. Will that happen with Blu-ray, VOB files? I don't have the 205 working yet, so I don't know what files are on the BD disks.

PS.. I plan to use Win-7 64bit. Is there a reason I should not? I do have the 32 bit version also.

        Thanks
        Bob

DVDMF is available from the GV registration site and works well, menu's are a little fussy but can be altered to taste.

Not really needed provided you don't exceed around 2 hours

Don't bother it looks better as a DVD than up scaled, unbelievable jaggies.
If you have a Firecoder Blue card an acceptable result can be achieved but needs to be converted to HD pixel count

DVDMF will make a Bluray folder that can be reburnt using NERO etc but make sure you use UDF 2.5 as the disk format

AC3 and PCM are the only 2 legal audio for Bluray and forget VOB's the Bluray disk is completely different

I use 32 bit with no problem and as the 64 bit version limits the memory available to a 32 bit program to 2Gb while a 32 bit OS allows up to 3Gb if that is the only program running
I will only go 64 bit when Edius does, there are plenty on the forum running 64 bit so your choice

            Thanks Barry,

            Just a few more??
?-Is there a bit-Rate Cal available (needed), like for the old DVDs?
A .Not really needed provided you don't exceed around 2 hours

? I do plan for some of my edits to be more than 2 hours. Right now, I use PC3 to encode about 6 hours onto a DL DVD. The bit rate is very low, but the quality does not need to be high. Does anyone know if there is a bit-rate cal for Blu-Ray?

            ?-Up scaled?
A-Don't bother it looks better as a DVD than up scaled, unbelievable jaggies.
If you have a Firecoder Blue card an acceptable result can be achieved but needs to be converted to HD pixel count

Can I burn regular DVD Video_TS / Audio_TS directories / vob files to a BD-disk and have a BD player, play the disk?

A-DVDMF will make a Bluray folder that can be reburnt using NERO etc but make sure you use UDF 2.5 as the disk format

?? - I really Hate Nero, can anyone recommend another burning program?
I forgot to say, that I will need to burn some BD data disks, for photographs.

            Thanks

              Bob,
They have couple programs out there which can calculate the bitrate for you. (google search). However you can use PC3 (Master quality) for SD & HD (which have bitrate calculation), then using MF7 (Free with Edius ver. 5.x) to build motion chapters and burn to BD (for HD) or DVD (for SD).

I just finished a project 2 hours 42 minutes in HD and using Anton's method to convert to SD and burn to DVD (very good quality) to send out for replication.

You can use the current tools to create BD and/or DVD.

IMHO, the best online bitrate calculator is the one at http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php -- it supports all relevant disk formats.

Thanks for the link to the calculator.
I have another dumb question or 2.

I see that I have the extra disk and it has the movie factory on it. Does this version come with a Blu-Ray disk player? Or will I need to purchase software, like WinDVD 10 pro to play back Blu-Ray movie disks?

I attached my BDR-205 Blu-Ray burner to my old system, just as a test and so I could look around at the BD disk structure (files), but I could not even open the disk to explore. It that because I don't have a Blu-ray playback software installed?

I use PowerDVD if I'm to play a DVD movie or test one of my own movies.
Is one better than the other. WinDVD 10 Pro or PowerDVD 10?
Both will play back Blu-ray disks.

                  Thanks

Don't think so bob, never tried, the Authoring or burning programs might object, one other thing that may interest you if you export H264 from Edius you can burn a AVCHD disk that has Hi def on a DVD approx 30 minutes available
Set the H264 output to 17Mb Avarage, 18 Mb Peak AC3 Audio and DVDMF AVCHD disk template manager to 18Mb and there will be no recoding, Quality is as good if not better than full Bluray!

If you export from DVDMF as an "iso" file the accompanied Burner program will burn a disk from the iso file
Other than that I also use Authorworks 4 for DVD and Bluray and it will burn the DVD and Bluray folders or iso with the correct format and also your photographs

For Authorworks just enter it into your search engine and you will be there, around AUD$100+

From that statement it would appear you are using Windows XP which cannot read UDF 2.5, there is a download from the Toshiba site that can fix that but cannot remember the details, works well on my XP machine
I think Anton could help us here or do a search for UDF or UDF 2.5 might find it

Barry, thanks again. It was the UDF 2.5 problem. I had no clue to what was wrong. Never even heard about the UDF problem in XP. It took me about 3 hours to find the UDF file I could download. Google had many links to other forums that had links to some UDF files, but most were dead link. The file I was finally able to get, was wrote by Cyberlink. It installed easy and all seems to be working now. Except, my graphic card in my old MSI system is not strong enough to run HD, and the trial version of PowerDVD shuts off.

                        Thanks again
