Well the verdict is in, AVCHD in Edius 5.5 and win 7 compatible, all free to download for existing Edius 5 users.
    Available somewhere this April ........

Yes Dave you can have both LCD and viewfinder on at the same time as well as set the viewfinder to B&W. There are things missing from the consumer XR500 that I would have liked. Set the clock with GPS, spot focus and exposure based on touching the LCD, face recognition all of which I am sure are in the Bionz processor!!!

For Anton. With encouragement from Tingsern I started backing up to LTo3 tape which is very fast and low cost. I can backup- 2 hours of AVCHD in about 5 mins. I just put everything into a project folder and backup everything. I can get about four 2 hour shows with 4 camera shoot on one $25 tape. And unlike XDcam ( which I would still like!!!!) I can shoot over 11hours on my NX5U !!!!. With this backup approach I can backup and restore a complete project very quickly and it is likely more robust than video tape.

tape maybe dead but long live XDCAM HD Disks, I can come home from a shoot, transfer files from disk to hard disk and store the XDCAM disk on the shelf, so I never lose any original footage, unless they fade away after so many years? who knows?

Appreciate it Dave., it looks like tape is dead or at least dying now for sure.

    Hi Mark

I my opinion based on what we have seen so far I would say a big yes....It has some nice features to make shooting and setup a bit easier....images are very nice at 24mbps, lcd/view finder are clear and sharp, low light performance is improved, 3 levels of ND filter, pcm audio.

I would like to get some more time in on this camera.....I did enjoy shooting with it.....it has some failings, there is no histogram, lcd & view finder do not work together (though I may of missed the setting for this in the menu), it is a little cluttered at the front end particularly the distance to the iris ring from the main block, audio dials can be a little fiddly.....most cams in this range suffer these sorts of issues though. I will post a couple of clips over the next few days on our website.

    Regards

    Dave.

Within Sony's Content Mgmt. software, the audio/video is great. That's as far as it goes.

In addition, the workflow documents don't discuss any of this.

Does anyone have any success with this?

fyi - I have tried the avcdh program utility and it doesn't seem to do anything.

    Thanks!
I think I answered this exact post on DVinfo forum. I have no problems with my NX5U files other than my Q9450 is not fast enough to play in realtime. Muting the video and the audio plays fine. Files play fine in Vegas Pro9. This is no different to files from my SR11 or XR500 which are Dolby rather than LPCM and are 17mbps rather than 24mbps. Seems to make little or no difference in playback response either in Edius or Vegas. AVCHD utility works for all these files.
NX5U is lovely. Interestingly, in full auto, shooting outside there is little difference to the XR500!! Both are better than the FX1.

We worked with this camera last week and it is a very good camera.....ours was a PAL model. It is AVCHD, fx mode is 24mbps very nice pictures with LPCM audio.......our workflow was to convert the AVCHD files directly from the SDHC card with AVCHD2HQ v3.2 at 1920x1080 2ch Canopus HQ Fine.

Images from the cam look great files convert with no issue, the audio is also very clean and editing the full HD HQ files was easy in 5.12. You may want to check your audio config and levels for recording.....you should have no problems with this cam or format.
