  • Using VOB's

I've been given 4 dvd -rw's which have some dvd video recorded on to them.

I need to extract some of the material and make a compilation 2 dvd set.

I import the vob files from the dvd adn when they sit on the timeline they are just green screen.

If I scrub along the timeline I can see the video fine.

I exported a section to canopus dv-avi and all I get is a green video.

    The vobs are
    704x576
    top field first
    Mpeg2 programme stream
    25fps
    VBR 4500 / 9586 kbps
    Ac3 audio 48khz 2 channel stereo.

I suspect made by a stand alone dvd recorder.

    I'm using edius 4.1

I tried using Procoder for edius to convert them direct, but it converts the first 5 to 15 seconds of each vob and then halts and that's it.

Any ideas on what I should look for?

I was just going to wait for 4.5, but if this will cure the problem then I'll upgrade now.

If you don't want to upgrade capture the dvd to avi via firewire . Everything will go smooth.

They are PAL, but a weird size, which is what makes me think they were recorded on some sort of stand alone dvd recorder. I've not used on, but I know some dvd camcorders record in this funny size.

I'm just about to try capturing from my dvd player, I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok, great idea, but let down by one problem........ none of my three dvd players will play the disc.

I have a cheap one and high quality one with surround sound etc and a dvd/hdd recorder.

Back to customer to find out what recorded them and how while I download the .24 update :)

Maybe your dvd players don't play Pal.
What are the project settings you use to play the vob files in?

Some DVD players do 704 instead of 720...

Easiest solution: Search google for the now discontinued DVD Decrypter (It's free, but kind of "illegal" unless you're only ripping your own homemade DVD's) then put in the DVD in your computer, choose IFO mode, and demux the mpeg2 stream into .m2v or .wav/.ac3.

Separately dump these files into Edius and you're good to go :)

                      SR,
Living in PAL land, all my dvd players play PAL :)

                      Dave,
I think I've got dvddecryptor stored away on a disc somewhere, I'll dig it out and give it a go.

                      I have upgraded to 4.24.

Difference, the thumbnail in the bin now shows the video, instead of also showing a green screen, but on the timeline it still shows green. If I double click on the clip in the bin it opens and plays in the capture window, although it quickly empties the buffer and stops.

Copied the vob files to the hdd, and this has got rid of the playback problem.

I still have the green screen though when played from the timeline.

I notice from my first post that the video is upper field first, whereas the project settings are lower field first. I cannot find a way to change to upper field first. Might this be it?

Although, saying that, I did get it to play for a short while, but when I scrubbed the timeline to get close to my edit point it then just played back green screen again.

Graham just use DVD Decrypter and your problems will go away.

Pop in your DVD, start DVD Decrypter, go to Mode > IFO
Then go to the "Stream Processing" tab, check the "Enable Stream Processing" checkbox, then select the first stream, which should be video, and click on the "Demux" radio button on the bottom. Select the second stream, which should be Audio, and click on "Demux" again. On the left side, under Destination, choose your destination folder. After you're done, hit the DVD to Hard Disk button and you will have yourself a ripped and demuxed mpeg2 and ac3/wav file. Drop these two files into Edius, and sync them from the first frame, and everything will be in sync.

                              Funny......

I cut one vob down and the first 45 seconds play ok then it just shows me the final frame for the remainder of the 2 1/2 minutes of that clip.

I'm off to find dvddecryptor. :)
