  • Panasonic TM300 with Edius/Hdstorm?

    Hi all,
I know it is propably a bit stupid question, but:
I'm planning to buy some modern hd camcorder, one of those:
    Panasonic HDC TM300
    Canon HF S21
    Sony (something) 550

In terms of editing footage from those cams, which one you would recommend?
I have old dvstorm2 card, but I'm planning to upgrade it to Hdstorm with latest Edius available.
I have no experience at all editing anything HD, from what I see on TV or BD player, 720p/24 would be enough for my needs.
I plan to do some material for web (e-learning), with relatively high resolutions so progressive format would be preferable.
    thanks for any input,
    Chris

The Panasonic HDC TM300 encodes to AVCHD. Your old Storm card will not handle this.

Edius Neo plus the Booster will, on a fast enough pc, edit AVCHD natively - search "Booster" for results with this combination. It has earned high marks from those that use it.

Unfortunately, the full version of Edius does not yet support Booster. Until it does, you will need to convert the AVCHD (*.mts) files to Canopus HQ for editing. The TM300 supports up to 17Mbps. These files will expand about 7X when converted to HQ format. You need to ensure you have sufficient hard drive space for these converted files.

I use the SD100 - the predecessor to the TM series. I have also captured and edited footage with the TM20. Both produce excellent pictures, except in low light. I am unable to comment on the other cameras.

I just started using a TM300. I'm using Edius 5.12 and using the same basic workflow as above.

I'm actually fairly pleased with the low light performance of mine, considering the price point. One negative I've found is the auto white balance can go squirrelly indoors. It does have indoor presets, and the manual white balance is quite good, however.

It has some fun features, like a dynamic contrast range enhancement, time lapse recording, good manual audio settings, etc. I'm still learning it. It's so nice not to have to worry about tape. If I see something like a great sunset, I can grab, go and shoot, without running all over searching for a blank tape.

It also will shoot in resolution as low as 1440 x 1080 - similar to HDV, and you can get a lot of footage on the internal memory with that setting. I need to compare the quality of that to the HDV stuff, and to it's native 1920 x 1080 at 17mbps to see how it stacks up. I haven't tried it yet.

I'm intermixing the video from it (after conversion to HQ) and using it on the timeline with HDV from other cameras without problems. So far, I've shot only one 3 camera production using the HDV cameras with this as the third. Most everything else has been just little test shots.

Overall, I think you will be pleased with the camera, especially for the price.

Sorry - forgot to mention I'm also using HD Storm, but it works equally well in OHCI mode.
