  • Best renderer to use for 1920x1080 HD

hey folks, i am currently working on a machinima project which is being edited in EDIUS. The footage is captured using fraps which is a screen capture tool which captures whatever your GPU processes in a video game. The avi's are captured at a designated frame rate at whatever resolution the game is running at. Luckily, the game we are using allows us to choose a resolution of 1920x1080 which means we can import the captured files directly into EDIUS even though they are using the FRAPS codec. EDIUS won't allow you to import any non tv -standard resolutions like 1280x1024.
I have checked the properties of the FRAPS avi's which seem to have a variable bit rate ranging between 20 and 30 megabytes a second. So what is the best codec to use as the render so maintain the best quality throughout the project?

    Canopus HQ
    Canopus Lossless
    Uncompressed RGB
    Uncompressed UYVY
    Uncompressed YUY2

    Thanks

Probably one of the first two - uncompressed 1920x1080 is not only HUGE, but it'll need some serious hard disk configuration to get you anything that resembles 'smooth playback' (ie. heavy duty RAID).

That said, if you can hold out a few more weeks, you might even be able to pull that Fraps video straight into EDIUS (v4.5).

    I should test that, actually..

Canopus HQ would do a good job as well with higher bitrates. Lossless is another option to look at, but it will require about half of the datarate that uncompressed Full HD requires.

If you are going to 'walk' all over it during editing and or in AE, you might consider doing the lossless codec. This will give you a little beefier image.
It will require a little more horsepower though. It is quite similar, visually, to uncompressed yuv. Personally, by my eyes, I can't tell the difference
        between the two.
