Edius always outputs a full resolution output, regardless if the particular effect is capable of playing back in realtime.
It's not fair comparing RT on these systems. It's just because other NLE's do it differently than Edius, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Can you work with 10Bit 2K Cineon DPX files with Edius in realtime? Will you be able to in the Edius near future? Can you do it in Premiere and Final Cut with a NvidiaFX4500 card now?

Edius does have good realtime capabilities I believe because everything is converted on import/capture to the YUYV codec which is handled by the GV card if you have one, and CPU/GPU if you don't. Both video overlays on PC and the baseband outputs on all cards and BOBS are derived from that source as far as I know.

You get no more realtime other than realtime with FX in 8bit 2UV. A file on output will have been in Canopus 8bit 4:2:2 UYVY, regardless of input source, all effects are 8 bit YUV.

This is good for realtime and allows Grass Valley to keep their RT promises by keeping it simple with all FX's and processing in YUVY, but it's not good if you aren't crazy about the 8bit 4:2:2 UYVY codec, or preserving a native workflow/format for higher bit depths or better colourspaces.

    Apples and oranges.

I wonder if you've tested the NX and HD expansion cards in tour MacPro yet.

Defocus stuff is RT for me (in SD). Can you give the exact effect name and category so I can test it? I can do a simple HD transition in an HD timeline if you want, I bet I won't get great results.

What's your gfx card and cpu?

Let me know before the trial runs out :)

    Hea StormDave,

Try a transition with Defocus/Bokeh. My system konks out at the first few frames. (HD projects only so far) Probably the most beautiful and most GPU intensive filter. Sparkles are RT killer too.

The Defocus/Bokeh filter takes forever to render for me. Probably along the lines of 0.10 to 0.20 RT.

Dying to know if I need a new GPU here!

It is RT for me...I know all variations of RT :)

Edius always outputs a full resolution output, regardless if the particular effect is capable of playing back in realtime. With a system like mine and a graphic card that is a bit outdated (blame Apple) Vitascene is realtime for me. I've tried most of the effects, heavy blur based transitions were all RT, etc. Nonetheless, with an nVidia 8800GTS, Vitascene should fly because it's very GPU dependent.

You need to render even in SD. See, the problem is about the understanding of idea of "realtime". Try "heavy" transition and extend it to 5-10 seconds, put cursor at exact beginning of it and hit space. If you see (bottom left part) that buffer is raising while transition is playing, then yes, this one is realtime.
But if your default is 1 sec. and it just jump over it, because buffer was full- you cannot say about realtime, this is wrong way to test.
BTW, as far as I remember Xplode Pro does not work (not supported) in HD.
On another forum I spoke with 20-30 Edius users, we tested videocards and their work with Edius. I'll say that about 30% of transitions and 75-80% of effects in Vitascene are not in realtime. Maybe some high-end cards will show better... Something like 8800 line of nVidia... (nVidia PCI-E does not work with Xplode for Edius/Pro in harware rendering!)

Yes it was SD, but nonetheless it was RT :)
I'm sure HD projects will require a render.

    I will test.

This must be a SD project, right? Vitascene + HDV = render! (divided by lol-squared)

Vitascene is an excellent plug-in, but a render monster! They had a 40% off deal a while back. Too bad if you missed out. Still worth it at full price. Film looks are very nice and customizable.

started a topic Xplode Pro 4.5 is realtime with ATI X1900

Xplode Pro 4.5 is realtime with ATI X1900

If anyone wants to know, just in case....on my Mac Pro, it has an ATI X1900 (It's clock speed is somewhat limited by Apple) but it is realtime with the patch that I made (easy install of Canopus ATI dlls) :)

Also the demo of Vitascene is also realtime...sweet! I might buy this. Let me see if they are giving away a good deal or not.
