gotcha and thanks all for the help today, pulled out the cables and headed for the analog route, it will be curious to see what the footage looks like when captured. thanks again to everyone, this is why I love this forum, good info and no elitist attitudellike in other forums like (cough) adobe for example..

my backup plan is to hit up a friend I built a matrox rt2 system for last year and try the analog capture there with the matrox hardware as I know it will capture via analog then transfer the files to edius and convert to hq from there.. I did also try to capture in ppro cs4 with the new updates installed and same story there so crossing my fingers or I have a bit of explaining to do with the client either way I think the videographer won't be used by our company in the future as this is a lot of hassle just to capture the project let alone edit and deliver it! yet another fun "ughknown" adventure working in HD. thanks again all, learned a good bit of useful info in this thread today.

Just a silly question does the RT2 do HD? or is it only SD?
If it does HD the best codec for transfer is to use Standard HDV mpeg as everything has to read this if it does HD

The RTX2 does, it's only downside is that it only does mpeg2 so H.264 footage is a bit of an issue with the matrox system. I built the system I was referring to. HDV and the hardware acceleration are it's strengths but lack of mpeg4 support is a pretty big weakness these days.

Then you should be OK export in standard HDV mpeg and if necessary encode to HQ from the bin if required after bringing back into Edius
