  • Edius 5 and XDCAM-EX

With the XDCAM-EX democratization, through JVC HM100 and also the Sony EX1R, here are some elements to easily edit XDCAM-EX in Edius 5
    Thank you for your suggestions.

    Edius5 + XDCAM-EX

Step 1 in the article is wrong. You're not supposed to drag and drop SxS to BPAV folder with Windows Explorer. You're supposed to use Clipbrowser to do that step. Clipbrowser checks the file and confirms an accurate file transfer.

If you use Windows to transfer your folder, you may have dropouts in your footage (I found this out through experience) even though the file may initially look fine.

I always use Clipbrowser to transfer EX1 files from one drive to another, and have never had a problem since doing so.

        ;) Sorry "iibw"
This is absolutely false. There is absolutely no difference between a "copy / paste" performed by Windows Explorer or Clipbrowser.
This either from a SxS or BPAV already present.
*** Better if they "paste" mp4 files in a structure built by the user (BPAV / CLPR) Clipbrowser restores all files "missing".
        (TAKR,CEUP,MEDIAPRO + under XXX_YYYY_ZZ : SMIL,PPN,XML,BIM).
Just try to verify it. The image below is quite explicit.
BPAV CLIP = Clipbrowser ; BPAV = Windows Explorer

" I always use Windows Eplorer to transfer EX1 folders from one drive to another, and have never had a problem since doing so "
        ( not files, read behind***)
        Bertrand
N.B. :Moreover Clipbrower Explorer does not display folders BPAV but directly thumbnails clips mp4 !!!.

I'm sorry, but I still think there is definitely a difference between copy/paste with Windows vs. with Clipbrowser. I'm not writing theoretically, I'm writing from past experience. I once thought there would be no problem dragging and dropping an entire BPAV folder from one drive to another with Windows, so I did. Then I noticed several dropouts on my copied footage. The dropouts looked like several pixels in a line missing for about half a second. This happened rarely, but nevertheless it did happen. It was unrecoverable.

Copying and pasting through Clipbrowser with CRC check on fixed the problem completely.

I always thought a file is a file, and a copy is a copy, but now I know through personal experience why Sony recommends using only Clipbrowser to copy contents of EX footage.

Ive used both methods to copy contents and infact clip browser v2.5 can mess it up badly too.

Logically thinking, windows file-copy has its own crc checking - how many other files do you copy using windows without any corruption?

I would guess most people never have any issues with corruption so why should these Sony files be any different? The answer is: they arnt!! So use what ever method you feel happy with.

If you use Clip Browser with CRC checked to offload the SxS cards to a folder on the Hdrive and I then want to make a backup copy of that folder, do I have to use CB again or would a copy and paste be OK, just curious.

You will for sure get two different answers depending who you ask. I say windows' own native file copy is more than fine for ALL copy operations on these files. Sony files arn't a special case - they are just normal 32bit files which can be copied etc just like ANY OTHER windows files on your system.

But I'm sure someone will chime in and go on about CRC and corruption, as if it's playing russian roulette with 'them there special sony mp4 files'.

                {can you feel my pain regarding this myth?!?!}

Thanks mattie. I've made backup copies using CB and copy and paste but haven't needed the backup copy, so I cant say what would work the best.

Mattie, what kind of symptoms did you experience when clip browser messed you up? Just curious.

Logically, there should be absolutely no difference between a Sony file or any computer file for that matter. A file is a file. One should be able to use Windows to copy from one location to another without errors. But if this completely true, why would Sony recommend using only Clipbrowser to move/copy their files? And why did I experience those dropouts when using Windows to copy? It happened more than once. Very rarely, but it did happen. Perhaps someone from Sony could answer these questions... is there something proprietary about their files that makes them unique, unlike other computer files? Are their files more prone to errors and corruption? Is there something special about Clipbrowser that makes it better than Windows to copy files?

I will continue to use Clipbrowser to transfer ALL of my EX files all the time, as I have not encountered any problems doing so, unlike Windows. I just wanted to post this as a warning to those who are using Windows and haven't had a problem YET. Once you introduce an error or corrupt your copied file, it is unrecoverable. I found this out the hard way.

dont get me wrong - clip browser is very handy for selectivly copying files and if you want to update an exisiting folder with more XDCAM files then you do need to use clip browser as it updates all the XML files etc but you certainly dont need it to just do a plain copy from card to PC.

I had clip browser tell me it had copied a file when in fact it had skipped it.
The file needed a restore from the camera and then it copied ok.

The same file would have copied fine using windows file/copy. so CB isnt fool proof by any means.

check out the dvinfo forum for more discussion on XDCAM etc as they like to chat about it a lot

I think we've nicely done the Edius aspects of this for now.

I made some adjustments to the tutorial with 2 possibilities to extract footages from SxS to HDD :

                            Edius5 + XDCAM-EX

Now that Clip browser 2.6 is out you can get rid of those flash bands.
