Is it likely that GV will ever consider allowing EDIUS 5 software only users some kind of upgrade path to their hardware? I'm interested in HDSPARK, but the idea of having to pay for EDIUS 5 again puts me off.

As far as I know, both HDSPARK (HDMI) and HDSPARK Pro (HD/SD-SDI) are available world-wide, in software-free SKUs.Comment

Yes, HDSPARK and HDSPARK Pro are both available as hardware-only for owners of EDIUS v5.

Siren technology does them in the UK, you can buy it naked but if anyone needs E5 it's cheaper to buy the two together.
