I think you will find that if you frequent this forum daily, your best bet is to sort the posts by new ones on top. I did this and it is much easier. I rarely have to scroll to get to a new post at all. It took a couple of days to get used to it since I normally have the new posts at the end, but now I would not go back. -
peterC,
Thanks for that! I discovered that 'Backspace' works even better than that for taking me back to the topic list (like the back arrow). Only problem with this method is that although it takes you back to the topic list efficiently, the topic is not updated to show that you've read that particular topic.
So I still would like a nav link at the bottom and to have that 'topic read' problem fixed.
Thanks again.
I use this method as opposed to Anton's out of habit and because it can be quicker.
Anton's is 1 step less unless you need to show printable thread, hence my habit, since I save off a lot of threads. What I don't have is a setup for customising and searching my 'database'. If I had, I could avoid any manual referencing as I do now. Which is very hit and miss and invariably has related info in posts that is applicable 'elsewhere'. Staying on topic is not always providing the best results/info dissemination, but that's another story.
So of course your own cross reference/search database is another beast on it's own and time time time to create. But necessary if you want best outcome on the huge amount of info you can (and usually do) gather.Last edited by peterC; 06-15-2007, 01:54 AM.Leave a comment:

the backspace works but it does not work
the backspace takes me back to where I want
the backspace fails to turn off the new posts icon to mark as read
so at this stage, I click the Go button at the bottom rightLeave a comment:

And while we're at it, it would be nice to have the nav links below the bottom posts too in order to sooth the aching mouse trigger finger from so much scrolling!
At the end of posts/threads I hit the home button. That might help you.
I use a few other hot tricks too, but reckon there are more. A new thread maybe?Leave a comment:

I like the format and the "tone" of the forum... It is much more "Professional" in the look and the content.
Keep up the good work guys

pjsssss,
Thanks for the ideas. I will try that setting but I still think it would be handy to have the nav link at the below the bottom post as well.

Or you can simply have the order reversed and have the latest posts at the top of the lost. I think there is less movement that way.Leave a comment:

I would love to see a copy of the navigation link that's at the top of the screen, down at the bottom right below the last post.
I have too many mouse clicks and drags in my day as it is and it would reduce a few to simply duplicate this nav link at the bottom where I always end up when reading posts.

Thanks for pointing that out. It would work better, for reading only, if the white was toned down to reduce the glare.Leave a comment:

the white text does not bother me, but this is another of stormdave's good ideas:
You know, this forum software supports "templates"...why not have another one that is the exact opposite (negative) of this same text? IE. Black on a brighter background? Just another "Grass Valley" template would be nice and it would please everyone.
You can pick between 2.Last edited by T-Bone; 06-01-2007, 02:32 PM.Leave a comment:

Hate the black backround
White letters on Black backround is a bad idea. Very hard to read. What percentage of sights do you surf on the internet or even print use black on white? I'm guessing less than 10%. There is a reason. This defines "form over function". Somebody probably thought it "looked cool". Please change. We're not trying to win awards here or impress our teenagers. This sight is suppose to be a resource for professionals. Jeez...And change that Ninja Turtle green while your at it. Next you'll be selling Grass Valley Action Figures.Leave a comment:

I am not sure it is a good idea for all users to have similar avitars
in such a case, I would prefer to see noneLeave a comment:
