Capture HD OHCI problems

I'm getting deck control, grey preview, and a stalled "initializing capture" window when I try to capture from my Canon XH-A1s. I'm using 6-pin to 6-pin firewire (expansion card). I can rewind and play the tape using deck control through Edius, but I get grey in the preview and when I hit the capture button I get the "initializing capture" and that's where it hangs. My only other option right now is OHCI HDV using HDSplit, which is fine, but I really would like to see Canopus HQ 1080p. If I'm not mistaken, when I tried 6-pin to 4-pin directly to my NX board, 720p is the max? I've searched the threads and found similar problems, but nothing that helps. Please lend me your brains.

Try a different 6pin6pin cable and a port to see if that is a remedy to the situation.

I get that occasionally, I even get it on SD capture. I have two DV decks and I swap them around, do a re-boot, then I get overlay, seems very "hit and miss"....is there a bug in E5.11??

Don't think this was a bug, but update to 5.12 just in case and try it again.

I captured some HDV footage from a Canon HV30 camera, and it worked fine in 5.12 (to Canopus HQ).

Make sure you select a proper project, and when you go to Capture > Select OHCI HDV you select the proper format that it was shot at, or else you might get the gray screen or some other problems. I think your camera shoots 1440x1080i60 if I am not mistaken. So choose that in the capture window, and choose Canopus HQ as the codec.

Replies are much appreciated, guys. I'm pretty sure I'm up to date on the Edius revisions, but I will be double checking that when the crust is pried from these weary eyes. The settings issue might be the culprit (though, I will try alternate cable and port) and I'm working on a 3 camera shoot (2 Sony FX100s, 1 XH-A1) and poor tape labeling (it was an out of town charity gig and a couple of young camera guys. long story). Anyway, if I still have your attention, am I right about 6pin to 4pin max at 720 and is HDSpark the only way to output my program monitor to a 1080p HD TV/Monitor or is there a less expensive way to get HDMI out?

I thought the only difference 6 and 4 have is that 6 pin allows for power to be supplied and 4 pin doesn't. The signal leads are the same.

HDSpark is the least expensive way to get HDMI out put of your Edius HD projects.

You mention an NX in your first post...if you have the expansion board then this will give you component HD output.....and also OHCI input....there is no limitation to 720P over OHCI and the cable being 4 or 6 pin has no bearing.
I think you may be refering to the limitation of the NHX-E1/2 4pin firewire port only being DV hence the need for a separate OHCI Firewire board or the expansion board.

Given your circumstance and the lack of good labeling on the tapes I wonder what else was missed by the operators....could it be they shot in a different format than HDV....maybe DV or Canons 24F mode.

A couple of things to try...if you have the XHA1 then try setting it to HDV mode before launching Edius check 24F and DV modes also....If the tapes were captured as HDV then they will play back in the Sony cams or decks without issue if not then that may be an indication to a format problem.

You're "The Dude", Dave. Pretty much covered it all. You were right about the firewire mini into the NX board too. I solved my issue by capturing in HQ 1440 X 1080p, but I appreciate your thorough help.
