  • Canopus Codec Pack Doesn't work with Vista

Okay, I have a video I exported as a Canopus HQ file.
I've tried playing in back on FOUR DIFFERENT machines with VISTA (that do not have Edius on them, but I installed the Codec Pack). The video usually plays back at the wrong speed and there is no audio. I don't see anywhere on Canopus website that this codec will not work with VISTA. What gives????

Maybe the OP needs to install it with "Run as Administrator". (Right click on the install, and Run as Admin)

The codec works fine for me on both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista. Also, the Canopus HQ codec doesn't handle audio, so if you get no audio, that's not the fault of the codec.

Did you ever install any of those goofy codec packs? You could use Headbands GSpot to open the AVI file and see which codecs are being used to play back the audio and video.

Finally, do you know if you have a Type 1 or Type 2 AVI file? Not all programs handle both equally well, or at all.

Canopus HQ only handles the encoding and decoding of video, it doesn't touch audio.

If you get no audio during playback, then there a) is no audio in the file, b) the audio codec that was used to encode is missing, or c) the software used to play the file doesn't understand this flavor (Type 1 vs. Type 2) AVI file.

So, when you convert a clip in the bin to HQ, how does the audio get to the new clip?

The audio goes in as PCM usually...
AVI containers support both video and audio separately. DV and MPEG are a bit of an exception to since they both support audio in the compression (DV just "packaged in" while MPEG can "package in" or do audio compression of its own).

I'll have to figure this out, as I'm now confused (ain't hard these days). I tjhought what he meant was audio was not included in the HQ file, but when I convert HDV files to HQ it's thee, so I'm missing something in the arguement.

Another fun bit of research for tonight.

AVI files are containers for audio and video streams. In the case of the Canopus HQ codec, it handles only the video stream. If there is audio in the AVI file, it must be uncompressed or be encoded using a separate audio codec.

Right - got you there. I think I see where I got off track. I mis-interpreted an earlier post in this thread. Besides, it was a very sleepless night.

                              Thanks.
